View Full Version : Don't forget LEST WE FORGET!

Once again our city council proves to the people of Kingston how out of
touch with reality they really are. It is amazing that every time an issue
comes to our council, they seem to make the wrong decisions. Do you not read
the local newspapers , do you not speak to people in your wards, do you not
watch the news! It is bad when everyone is not surprised when they make
another faux pas and we just have become complacent with the fact that our
council will make another ill thought out decision.

Everyday we are hearing of tourist returning to their hometowns and saying
how little they enjoyed Kingston, we have businesses leaving Kingston
because of the lack of support from the municipal government, industries are
not coming in do to the lack of municipal support, small towns around us
have bigger and better attended municipal supported events for their
citizens, we have citizens actually telling their stories to newspapers why
they are leaving to make a better life in other communities and to move to
cities that are actually dealing with reality and turning their cities into
prosperous communities.

And how do you fine elected officials deal with this economic and social
disaster, you continue to stumble headlong with the LVEC project.

A project that, I have not heard one person on the street profess to want or
more so, want in the location that happens to be surrounded by elected
officials and friends owned property. Can you tell us what the true cost of
this white elephant will be and do have guarantees that you will bring in
the entertainers that even bigger cities around us have a hard time
attracting or will we have another Wayne Newton fiasco on our hands (When
will you learn).

You say there is enough parking downtown to support this 6,000 seat arena,
my challenge to you is where. May I remind you that even though you may have
a reserved spot at city hall, most people have a hard time finding parking
spots during working hours. And on that note, what are you going to do with
6,000 people and all the workers downtown during a daytime event or is this
arena only going to be operated at night, when the working people do not use
the parking spots for your visitors to the LVEC.

Let me continue on.

You take a heritage site (Market Square) and defile it by secretly
accepting money for refurbishing it at a cost of having a family name put on
to it. To add salt to the wounds, we find out part of the secret deal
includes this family having a seat on the committee that determines on what
events happen at the Market Square. Next time I donate money to Fort Henry I
will demand my name be added to the title, Paul's Fort Henry, sounds catchy.

You take a site that was built in memory of all the veterans (The Memorial
Centre) and want to sell it to pay for your grandiose ideas, thank god that
came to a crashing halt or is there another secret deal with a family in
town that we should know about?

And this is where I get to what this letter is really about!

I ask each council member to please take time and think how they are going
to deal with the veterans come Remembrance Day this year. I truly believe it
won't be just another photo opportunity for you.

Sara Meers I commend you and fully support your motion to follow what so
many respectful city councils around our country have done and allow
veterans to park free for the rest of the Year of the Veteran. And may I
add, have done with little problem or second thought, on how to figure out
who is a veteran.

Mr. Paterson, how naive can you be in saying that the reason you turned down
the idea was with the problem on how would we know if it was a veteran or a
associate Legion Member.

How do you think the men and women that are stationed here at CFB Kingston
feel when they see their fallen comrades sacrifices be treated like the they
are trivial and meaningless to us. Maybe the men and women sitting in a
lonely sentry post on that peacekeeping mission will be doubting the reason
why they are there or the engineer that just helped a community drill a well
will feel ashamed when he comes home because of the treatment we give the
men and women before him.

SHAME, SHAME on all of you except you Sara, on how quickly and decisive you
dealt with this issue. Only if you could be that quick and decisive on all
other matters regarding Kingston. For the few dollars that you may have not
collected in fees, you could have offered our veterans a simple thank you
for their sacrifices and mended some of the hard feelings following how cold
and thoughtless you dealt with the Memorial Centre. Many of these veterans
were gone from love ones for longer then you will ever sit on this council
and many never returned.

Sara please continue to press for this and please invite the public to show
their support and show the rest of the council how to show a little respect
for people that fought so they may sit on the City Council. Even I ask you
to go so far as to as for a public meeting regarding this issue, ohhh that
is right council meetings are not public meetings.

I truly believe that you have FORGOT why we say LEST WE FORGET!

I urge all you to think before you act next time. And I also ask you how
many of you have a Year of the Veteran Pin and if you wear it at all, maybe
you should take it off until you realize what that pin means.

Respectfully Yours,
Paul Carl
