The dog days of summer...
Wow! I was wrong about the new director of KEDCO. I said he would turf half the staff with in the first few weeks while at the helm of the free loading ship but it took a little longer. KEDCO had to lighten the load before the ship sank.
Well it was good to see KEDCO shedding some dead weight, the question is did they shed enough of the dead weight?
Now what are they planning for the Kingston area, or what are they planning to take credit for? I can see the headlines in The Whig in September when the student's return: "Food Sales Take A Dramatic Rise," "Kingston Sees an Increase in Population," "Lack of Housing May Result in Construction of More Rentals" or, like last week: "KEDCO Saves City's Image by Expanding Docking Spaces." I guess booking your docking space six weeks in advance and paying for it means nothing.
Who do we have handling the booking of dock space? Was there a conflict with the poker run boats, or is just another mismanaged city organization? The group of people that runs the agency are business people, so is this
how they run their own business?
Have you been on the KEDCO website? Look at the "success stories" on the main page. Success in farming! What about developing new industry? KEDCO has not been a sailing success; it's a barge that is in need of a tow or someone who can tow the line.
Maybe we should just sink the whole thing and create a dive site for the Queen's School of Business on how not to run a organization.
Now, is it the Springer Market or not? I have been to the City's web page and failed to see the Springer name. I have been to the market and the name is not there either. Has the City set itself up for a law suit? Will the Springer family get some of their money back? How long till the City has to refer to the Market as the "Springer Market" Are we already in breach of our contract?
We, as the public will have to wait and see as we are not allowed to debate council on this issue.
As for the WED-Ha (White Elephant Done Half Assed), AKA the LVEC: What is the total cost at this point? When the city was offered the LaSalle Bridge last year, according to reports on the NEWS two weeks ago, The Big Cheese stated that the City is not interested in taking ownership of anything if they don't know the future costs.
According to the Big Cheese, Council and staff are concerned about the hidden costs they may incur operating the bridge.
Gee, he almost sounds like a taxpayer. I wonder how he plans to spin his way out of the LVEC. I guess the shovel that was supposed to be in the ground has been to busy shovelling something else.
When will this service review start? Or were we holding this over the union during the contract talks? Are we going to review the workers or the management. We had recruited a great public servant to look after our cultural and recreational assets, and what happened to her? She lasted less than two years after being exposed to the inner workings of City Hall. How long will the new CAO last? Or how long will the current management last with the new CAO?
When talking to some staff there seems to be some concern about their jobs. In listening to the best of the rumour mill, after Labour Day, some people are going to walk away from City Hall unemployed after they finish using up their holidays this summer.
The question is are they being asked to leave or just taking an early retirement?
