Well where should we start this week? Well the city lost yet another court case over cleaning up a dump. Maybe there is a lesson here. The city should not build anything beside water because it will never increase in value and will cost more in the future to clean up. Sound familiar? For that matter the city seems to have the minus touch. Build it and they will come is the motto is other towns and Cities. In Kingston, build it, lose tax money, and then fight in court. At some point the City will be sued over letting the OHIP building to be built on polluted land.

Belleville is building a race track and slots. Gan is going to double the size of the Casino. Napanee has built a double rink. But in Kingston armed with study after study we will build something bigger and better than the rest. Or will we?

The recent downsizing of the White Elephant , A.K.A the "LVEC" means not only do we let great opportunities pass by the city, when we do something it's done completely half -assed. For what we are going to pay for the "WED - Ha" (White elephant done half-assed) we could have out bid Rogers Communications for the SkyDome. Rogers only paid 25 million for the building.

Or is the cost of the dump/golf course eating into the tax dollars that the council was going to use to build the WED-Ha?

There was something interesting in the Whig (if you can believe it) from a writer from Kingston. If there was, say, a small fire in the kitchen of one of the food stands in the WED-Ha how are 5000 people going to get out and fire crews going to get in with two lanes of traffic? And what happened to the Wellington Street extension? The drawings in the paper do not show the road extending beyond the WED-Ha.

If the Kingston Fronts are not sold, are they willing to commit to a long term contract to the WED-Ha regardless what kind of offer is made for the team? Or is the City willing to buy the team? With no NHL in the foreseeable future how much money are we going to expect from NHL Clubs to be invested in this rink?

Could someone from the City ask the province if there is any money coming for hockey rinks? There is one team of councillors trying to build the WED-Ha, and another group wanting to build a community centre. Which one will win? Who will get the M-Centre?

The Harvey Fan Club spoke again over the week. Kingston W-S said the big cheese has promised to do something and he has, according to fan club. I don't know, I don't see anything being done.

KEDCO is claiming victory for the 75 jobs it has created in an industrial park, wow!! The Harvey Fan Club even wrote an article and there was TV coverage. But the last line indicated that the new job were not call-centre jobs. What a ***** and shoddy shot from the rag of the day. Was this because the StarTek employees said they don't want a union? I know the papers tend to be a little left of Stalin and I tend to be a little right of Attila and the Hun, but that was a ***** shot by KEDCO and the Newspaper by any standard.

An invaluable reference will be the service review. What can the city do and what can others do better, more cost effective and in the best interest of the public and rate payer?

Calling all unions, are your people better than the private sector? What if the private sector has a unionized staff? Could someone pick up my garbage for less than $20.00 bucks an hour?

Why hasn't there been more discussion in the media about how this project will cost taxpayers money? At the last council meeting, Don Gedge said that the municipality would have to foot the bill for debt financing because there isn't a financial incentive for the private sector to take it on themselves.

Furthermore, as for the Phase 1 and 2 environmental assessments that Gedge's report states as not showing any findings that would impact the project, he appears to have changed his tune in that "some soil" will have to be removed because of contamination.

Is the straight honest truth too much to ask for? Transparancy and opennesss is a foreign concept to our local government. Maybe we could hire some more consultants from Ottawa to tell council how to do it. <sarcasm>

Cheers, Derek

Call me a little concerned, the total cost of all the projects that have been talked about far exceeds the amount that is available. Is this new math? I will go through the City of Kingston Finanicals and add up the debts to see how much is really there or not really there!

I think the tax payer will be suprised. If anyone at the City is reading this at work could you spare a dime or two for the homeless. I was hoping since staff are so busy building the rink at City Hall, could we hire some people to clean off the outdoor community rinks?

My offer still stands for a Large Venue Outdoor Rink like Ottawa. I will buy the shovels and we call clean off that large body of ice.

Directions to the LVOR: When leaving City Hall rather than going left or right go straight till you come across a large piece ice that seams to show up every winter.

I have been poking around on the costs of different projects around the City and I guess I hit a sore spot with some of the staff. They have been doing some news releases over the pass few days updating the public on the real cost with some of these projects. I will push the buttons on the real penision cost, WSIB and the back taxes that some people have yet to pay. I think we are finding that around $40 000 000 is real costs that need to be factored into the taxes over the next few years. Strange that amount would almost cover the cost of a large hockey rink.
