Is it not wonderful that the towns surrounding Kingston act like cities while Kingston's city officials show their true colours?

Gananoque is wondering how to spend its casino winnings. How many people currently on Kingston's council were against the casino coming to Kingston?

Yes, we know, Mayor Harvey, that you want to build a fancy rink, the LVEC. But by announcing this week that you want the shovel in the ground six months early, you're saying, "All the committees working on its various aspects be dammed!" Is that smart? After all, you want to build that rink over land that could be polluted. The OHIP building next door, which was built a couple of decades ago, is a sick building. It’s infamous for the large number of employees who get sick, the union says, from its environmental problems. Will history repeat itself with the arena?

I know that the group of mayors for eastern Ontario now has a new leader, Peterborough's Mayor Sylvia Sutherland. What happened, Harvey? I thought you pulled this group together. Maybe Peterborough will get some provincial funding this year. I know we are still waiting for ours.

And Harvey, if you are going to leave town again for a few weeks, like you did when you went to Australia over Christmas, don't let the council touch the purses strings. They start giving the money away. Deputy Mayor Foster was eager to give funds to tsunami victims. Look, we can't afford to give the money away when the province still has not given us some cash to pay for current debts. And don't leave Councilor Leonore Foster in charge! I can't say it any clearer: She had her 15 minutes of fame and blew it. Maybe the same people that encouraged former councilor Dave Meers to run for mayor will do the same with Foster. We all know what happened to his political career.

Hey what about this $10 charge for use of the outdoor rinks? Is this the first of the LVEC taxes? Is anyone listening?

KEDCO now has a new leader. Will this be the end of three-hour lunches? I give half the staff four weeks before they are tossed onto Brock Street.

Last but not least, we have a lot of decent cops on our force. Stop hiring other cities' problems, and make sure who ever has been hiring the cops lately has no say in our next CAO. We need excellence. They will be tough shoes to fill, I will miss Bert.
