Electors' Mad as Hell blogger says Kingstonians should wake up !

Let’s get real here folks. Is everyone asleep at the switch? In this first of a series, our Mad as Hell blogger wonders why more Kingstonians aren’t weighing in on such important issues as the conduct of Queen’s students and City Council members. Your reaction is welcome!!!!

Where is the local media ? With TV, radio, and rags calling themselves newspapers, where was the coverage of the homecoming events? I am sorry that the media missed hundreds mixing it up with the local KPD.

Maybe they are silenced like the public became after the recent city council meeting when students showed up to make their pitch on what went wrong and who’s to blame..

Maybe the media is afraid of Queen's. I know that if just a few hundred of the common people on government support had a party--- say in Rideau Heights---with a few pops the KPD would be cracking skulls. After all, we can't have people who are living below the poverty line partying on government money. Better that that government money be spent on programs that help our more affluent citizens cope with the stresses and costs of higher education!

I think if the KPD had shown up with a few camcorders and shot the event there would be an end to the arguments of who was at fault. It could be shown on CITY TV and parents could see their little darlings puking on the sidewalk.

The students who showed up for council expressed how they are citizens of Kingston. Bull@#$% ! If you ask any one of them where they are from they will probably say Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver----even if they have been living on Johnson Street for the past 4 years. If the same student attended school in Europe, they would say things like I have lived the past few years in a quaint little town on the outskirts of Paris. But they would toss their KD before they will admit they are living in Kingston.

They are under age, under weight in the common sense department, (they still stand beside puddles when I drive by, after 13+ years of education), they want more money from government , (i.e. money which unknown to the average student comes from taxpayers) and yet they feel oppressed because they can't understand why I don't want their drunken ass on my front lawn.

Where are the lawyers? Is there a law firm that wants their newbies to get their feet wet? Can you say "action, factual causation, fiduciary responsibility, restitution?" If a Queen's Law grad can beat a ticket in Toronto, then a St. Lawrence student should launch a class action suit here in Kingston.

Attention anyone who may have received a parking ticket in Kingston. They just pasted part of the by-law at the recent council meeting. I wanted to reach into my TV and choke every member of council. How can a city give out parking tickets without the correct bylaws in place? If there was a snot nosed Queen's student worth his or her weight in beer they would be all over this. The City of Kingston's parking by-laws are not up to date. This means if Queen's wants to raise its equity in the community they would find a law student and would rip a new one into the City. Are you listening students? The same cops out there sent to stop your parties have been giving out parking tickets without correct supporting by-laws.

If the kettle is going to call the pot black.... I think B. George spoke and maybe Meers but I was busy looking for old parking tickets in hopes of getting a refund.

Downes spoke, and almost made sense, K. George took some of the wind out of his sails. But the point is not lost. The public was the clear loser as council effectively told the public to shut up and don't bother to come to council, we won't listen, and we don't have to. It is now a by-law. The good news is the council has never written a by-law that hasn't been broken by the public or the council themselves. So they may not want to hear what the public has to say on issues or events but they will if there is enough public support. This sets a dangerous precedent for council. One person can not come to council and voice concern. They will have to be organised and have numbers. This means they and not the council will be organized. Poor council. They have shot themselves in the foot again !

Does anyone out there care ????

I too, have been stunned by the lack of public concern, especially with this new "gag" bylaw. I couldn't care less about the activities of drunk Queen's students and quiet frankly I am getting rather bored with it. Let's look at what's really going on in this city ... boardroom democracy makes for stange bed fellows ...
