Vibrant Development Needed, LVEC Committee Told
Original Task Force Members Make Passionate Presentations
The Large Venue Entertainment Centre (LVEC) Steering Committee met for an early morning meeting Tuesday at Kingston City Hall.
The meeting heard a passionate and spirited overview from three members of the Mayor's task force that in March recommended building the multi-use entertainment facility on the west bank of the Cataraqui River in downtown Kingston.
"Task force committee members continue to be passionate about this project because we want to be part of vibrant development that will help transform a long-lasting negative perception - a perception that our Kingston has a CAN'T DO attitude," stated Joe DeMora, Chief Executive Officer of Kingston General Hospital and a member of the Mayor's task force who authored the final recommendation report to city council.
"You can be sure the LVEC will become a symbol, and legacy of a CAN DO attitude. The steering committee has an unprecedented opportunity to start harnessing the pent-up energy and enthusiasm for this project," offered Martin Skolnick, a real estate developer and also a member of the Mayor's task force.
Councillor Leonore Foster who chaired the Mayor's task force added: "If you review the exciting prospects for making this facility a state of the art, environmentally green building, the benefits are endless."
At Tuesday's meeting, the steering committee also received an update from the City's CAO, Bert Meunier with regard to the imminent hiring of an LVEC Project Manager.
"We anticipate making the announcement of the successful candidate by the end of the week. I can tell you we have a very experienced, competent individual and that we are very pleased with the selection," he added.
The Project Manager, says Meunier, will coordinate and support all the required activities and tasks associated to the project implementation. The person will administratively report to the CAO and support the Steering Committee and the project full-time, added the CAO.
Meunier also provided information to the steering committee on how best to proceed with gaining access to the privately held LVEC land in order to conduct preliminary environmental and geo-technical studies.
The LVEC Steering Committee mandate is to provide overall general direction and advice to Council on key decisions that will be required.
The steering committee, chaired by Williamsville District Councillor Ed Smith meets the second Tuesday of the month at 7 a.m. Meetings are open to the public. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, October 12, at 7 a.m.
