View Full Version : Boarded up rowhouses on Montreal Street
On the west side of Montreal Street, south of the old Depot Daycare Centre at Railway Street, lies a series of boarded up row houses. In the middle of an affordable housing crisis, could the City of Kingston not fast track the restoration or redevelopment of this site?
The site is currently in tax arrears to the City of Kingston.

I've always thought that if nobody is interested in buying it, then turn it over to Habitat For Humanity or turn it into affordable housing units. They are not only an eyesore for people entering Kingston from the 401, but a target for vandals.
Cheers, Derek
These houses have already been vandalized on a number of occasions. They were set on fire in the most recent incident. Its a shame that the city cannot push this project along. I understand that the estate of I.Cohen and Company Ltd. would like to dispose of the site for a nominal cost.
See site photo below:
Now come on guys lets be fair. The city loves to keep these properties vacant so that the little fire bugs in the area can torch them in the hopes they will burn to the ground and help with demolition costs. The city does not really care, take a drive along montreal street from the 401 to railway.......

Most of Kingston's eyesore's are areas in transition. One has only to look at Princess Street from Division to the "traffis circle" (O.K., I'm dating myself)-to see the need for some planning initiatives. One of the problems may be that the land is held by many owners and unless there is some city initiatve or a 'daddy big-bucks', it is unlikely that this area will be sympathically developed. If the transportation study were to be implemented then this area would be high density residential as it is on the bus route.Right now this is 'pizza strip' with all the accompanying garbage. If we were truly cariing we would make sure that the zoning and official plan for this area stressed the overall design, open space density etc. Is this Ed Smith's area? Maybe he can answer if he is a participant in this site.

That is an interesting comment and one you made in an earlier posting (about implementing studies).
Anglin Bay is designated for light industrial/residential, yet council is willing to change that to build an LVEC. All of the studies and "official plans" are meaningless if council simply continues to ignore them.

Under the Property Standards By-law those proerties are abandoned, certainly not liveable, and they have to be boarded up, specifically to keep the little vultures out of there... of course if people would lock their mongrels up we wouldn't have that problem in this town now would we... maybe if the police had enough manpower they could actually BE somewhere when something happened and stop the firebugs and little demons from destroying everything that isn't nailed down.
Maybe the owners of the property (a numbered company maybe??) should put a little effort into fixing them up, what with our No Vacancy rate so low I am sure they can rent them out for a tidy summ if they actualy put some money into it.
The wrong peopel are running this town, and I certainly don't mean City Hall.

The properties mentioned at the beginning of this thread are actually subject to sale for non-payment of city property taxes. They are part of a brownfield site.
The Corporation of the City of Kingston is essentially responsible for these land and buildings.
Take care

That is what i thought, However the city seems to like to hide anything about the election, past present or future
