Stats Canada and OHL Figures:

A report prepared by June Wild (presented at Mayor's Task Force Meeting, January 16, 2004) using Stats Canada and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) figures indicates the number of seats required to support various types of events.

A 2500-seat facility supports hockey games and regular arena functions. The Memorial Centre currently has 1100 season ticket holders; average Frontenacs attendance is 2250 per game.

A 3500-seat facility adds space for small concerts and small exhibits. The Memorial Centre capacity is approximately 3000 seats.

With 4500 to 6500 seats, the facility provides additional space for children’s acts, ice shows, agricultural, sporting, trade shows and larger concerts.

Most OHL franchises average about 5200 seats. Mississauga is 6500 seats; London is 9000 seats [NOTE: Report of average seating may be skewed; task force should look at the median size]. OHL-endorsed franchise for Barrie, ON is 4200 seats. OHL supports new construction in Kingston and suggests facility should be 4000 to 5000 seats.

If we are going ahead with the LVEC we have to get it right. We have to create a building in which there can be excitement. Excitement is non-existent, no matter how good the performance, if 2000 people are sitting in 6500 seats. Better 'standing room only' than too many seats. At the very least we have to be able to adjust the sixe of the venue to the number of ticket holders - much the way the Ambassador Hotel can adjust the size of its dining rooms for conventions.
