Canada, Ontario Invest In Recreation Facility Improvements
The residents of Kingston will soon see improvements to six community centres through an investment announced today under the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program.
This investment will make an important contribution to a robust, healthy and safe environment in the community of Kingston. The Honourable Peter Milliken, MP for Kingston and the Islands, John Gerretsen, MPP for Kingston and the Islands, and Isabel Turner, Mayor of the City of Kingston, announced the investment today. Construction is expected to start shortly and be complete by 2003.
Improvements to the Cataraqui/Kinsmen Arena, Wally Elmer Youth Centre, Kingston Memorial Centre, Harold Harvey Arena, Cook Brothers Youth Centre, and Centre 70 Arena will include upgrading or replacing plexiglass and dasherboards, protective netting, dehumidification systems and lift-gates.
Renovations will also be made to change rooms, washrooms, roofing, interior walls, and spectator seating. Sprinkler systems will also be installed or upgraded.
The Government of Canada through Industry Canada and the Government of Ontario through SuperBuild will each contribute up to $400,819 to the project. The City of Kingston will invest the balance of the project's total cost of $1,202,456.
"I am pleased that the Government of Canada is investing in community and recreation facilities in Kingston," said Mr. Milliken.
"This investment will improve the quality of life of our citizens, and I am delighted that the Government of Canada, through the Canada Ontario Infrastructure Program, is ensuring that health and safety issues are addressed in this community."
The Honourable Tim Hudak, Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, was unable to attend the event, but did send his regards. "Through SuperBuild, we are investing in and building strong communities across Ontario," said Minister Hudak. "Sport, culture and tourism facilities have a significant impact on our communities and by improving health and safety conditions to meet community needs, we are creating jobs and enhancing local economic development."
“This project is a significant undertaking for the community of Kingston, and we are very pleased to have the support of the federal and provincial governments," said Mayor Turner.
This is one of a series of matching federal and provincial investments to help municipalities protect the health and safety of their residents through essential infrastructure projects totalling more than $212 million to date in Ontario. More announcements under the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program are coming.
Allan Rock, Minister of Industry, and Tim Hudak, Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, are the federal and provincial ministers responsible for implementing the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program.
