Blogging on the whig about this event
This was a wonderful visit for people who actually got to attend the dinner at Chez Piggy. Michael Ignatieff was magnificent. He shook hands with every single person who was there for the brunch. He addressed questions from the people who were there to met him and they deal with issues that dealt with the realities of what is happen here in Kingston. The public question's were spontaneous.
Mr Ignatieff, not only acknowledge Liberal supporters, but he also shook hands with members of the Progressive parties, (whom I didn't recognize) and also Bridget Dorothy from the Green Party.
Michael's sense of humour was great. He fully knows that people will make fun of the bus breaking down and he even had no trouble acknowledging it. His answer is "SO WHAT". I find this cute because it really says to the people who are like children who say "NA, NA, NA Your bus broke down NA, NA, NA,is this "YES, SO WHAT". LOL
So I enjoyed his sense of humour. Also he brought along with him other officials, whom he introduced to the group at the luncheon. People I did recognize were the following:
Mayor Harvey and his wife, Harvey was also gracious and shook hands with everyone who was there. The people enjoyed his visit and so did I. Also in attendance were, Bittu George, who I know as being an excellent Councilor even when he never was in my district. He has now entered the race for the Kingston and the Islands Liberal position that Peter Milliken has retired from. Also, a Ted Hsu, whom you can learn more about by watching the following website http://vimeo.com/13181463. Along with them was Lisa Osanic's husband Mr. Osanic whom I didn't know but wish him luck.
Don't be surprised if there will be another Councilor who is seriously thinking about also running for the Liberal Vacancy. Sources tell me that
councilor Steve Garrison might be testing the waters.
Steve if you are serious, please start letting US know soon. I do want to cover everyone's campaigns on the Kingstonelectors.ca website as well as blogging on here about what I learn, hear, or even suspect.
All in all however, it has been a great day to meet with Michael Ignatieff and his TEAM. which he says he wants to work AS A TEAM, not just a dictator of a political party.
I enjoyed it when Michael Ignatieff was introduced to Mark Gerretsen as being the Future Mayor of Kingston.
Now that I have covered this exciting campaign opportunity, For every Liberal who doesn't have his/her membership as yet and wants to have the opportunity of voting for the person in Kingston who they want to replace Peter Milliken this is the time to do so. Here is just one way of doing this. I know first hand that Ted Hsu and his team is taking memberships at the present time. Where else can you get to know more about this party and have voting rights for only $10.00 a year membership. tedhsu75@gmail.com on behalf of Ted Hsu (ted@hsu.org)
Okay Progressive, NDP, and Greens, I don't mind reporting what I know about your events as well

Candidate for Federal Liberal Nomination,
Kingston and the Islands
Very soon we will be selecting the next Federal Liberal candidate for Kingston and the Island. I am writing today for your help in seeking that nomination.
I have a unique combination of knowledge and leadership experience. My background includes working as a research physicist, an international business manager, and the Executive Director of a not-for-profit association promoting investment and job creation in Kingston and the Islands. My broad experience and diverse networks will enable me to assemble a wide base of support reaching beyond the conventional political divisions.
As Member of Parliament, I will place myself at the service of municipal leaders in Kingston and the Island to work for local priorities. As Executive Director of SWITCH, I am already working to build up the sustainable energy sector, a sector that has a great potential for the Kingston region’s economy in the 21st century. I am committed to seeing that future generations growing up in Kingston and the Islands have the benefits and opportunities that I enjoyed. I am committed to the creation of a federal government that works for Kingston and the Islands; one that is fiscally, socially, and environmentally fair to all Canadians today and to future generations. The goal of a government should not be just to hold power, but to invest in people, knowledge, institutions, and the preservation of our natural environment.
Please consider taking five minutes today to join the Liberal Party so that you can vote at the nomination meeting. Ask your family and friends to do the same. Supporting my nomination does not commit you to vote one way or another in the general election.
For more information about me and why I am the right candidate for the Liberal party, go to www.tedhsu.ca. I also invite you to join me and Team Ted as we work to build support for our campaign.
I hope that I can count on your support!

My own views on Ted

My own views regarding Ted:
I have just recently met Ted although I have heard supportive comments about him, I wanted to speak with him and listen to his views.
Yes, the literature above sounds wonderful and very interesting. However, What has stricken me with total admiration of this young man are these facts that I have seen during his annoucements:
1: People actually took the time to come to his annoucements even though they just came back from China
2: Scientists I met briefly there has nothing but great phrases about him.
3: Ted met me for the first time at this annoucment and STILL spoke TO ME rather than at me.
4: Ted was proud to come into his presentation with both his beautiful wife and wonderful children
5: His Team Ted group members where friendly, supportive, and welcoming
6: I have attended many, many, candidate annoucments, but I never before seen , YELLOW SIGNS place along the walls which were signed by people who gave him nothing but praises and support for Ted, It seemed to me that every wall in the room was covered with these signs and there were plenty of them to read. The people who supported him were from various fields of interests and spheres of industry and science
7: People who I actually spoke to about Ted, were Hypnotized and Eager to start working for this man because he is so dynamic.
8: People who attended this annoucement came from different cultures and experiences.
Ted, All I can add to this is that the Liberal Party of Kingston and the Island, will not only benefit from having your on their side but also All of Canada will benefit as well

Dear Lydia,
It's been an exciting few weeks since the last newsletter! Campaign events have led the way: a very successful launch at the Ongwanda Center on July 6 with over 120 people in attendance, record numbers at Tuesdays with Team Ted, and coffee parties like the one at the Queen's Physics Department where 15 people came to hear me speak.
If you missed the launch and haven't already seen my speech, please watch the video below to find out why I am running and what our campaign is about . To help spread the word, I encourage you to show this video to as many of your friends and family, as possible.
Click on the following link http://vimeo.com/13181463
These events are moving us closer to the number one campaign goal: signing up new members. We can win this nomination only by having the most voting members on nomination day. We are well on our way, but we need to quadruple our number of supporters over the next six weeks.Recruiting members as soon as possible is our number one priority because the cut-off date for new members is some unknown future date. The threat of a fall election could force an immediate nomination meeting call and membership cutoff.
This week, please help raise support for our campaign by signing up your friends and family. Invite Ted to come and talk to your group. Encourage people as young as fourteen years old to get involved in their future, become members and vote. One extra person can make a world of difference!
On a different note, I'd like to thank Catherine Milks who has taken on the role of campaign manager. I also want to thank Kristen Read who helped us get started and continues to advise the team.
Read on below to make this campaign more than just another nomination, but a movement that changes the face of politics-as-usual in Kingston and the Islands and gives a real voice to communities about who they want to represent them.
Warmest regards,
Ted

For those who want to know a little more
Kingston at A Democrate Crossroads
Kingston and the Island Federal Liberal Association
A Proud Tradition
Peter Milliken, our Member of Parliament for more than two decades, has announced tht he will not be contesting the next federal election. Peter leaves very large shoes to fill. He is not only Kingston's longest=serving MP but also the longest serving Speaker in Canadian parliamentary history. Kingstonians can take justifiable pride in having gifted Canada with his services for so long.
Peter's tenure is no anomaly but rather part of a pround 48 year political tradition. From Edgar Benson to Flora MacDonald to Peter Milliken, we have consistendly elected Liberal and Progressive Conservative MPs of ministerial calibre who have made signficiatn contributions to Canada while ably representing our community. Kingston area voters will expect no less in the next election.
The Political Contex Canada's democracy is treatened. Much of what makes Kingston and Canada such wonderful places to live stems from the thoughtful, caring, community-minded values of our people. Those values are under attack by a narrow Republican-inspired neo-conserative idealogy. The Harper government does not represent Canadians. It is in power only because the moderate two-thirds of voters (the real majority) split their votes amongst four other parties.
Despite that lack of a real mandate, the Harper Conservatives are fundamentally changing Canada without ever consulting us. The billion-dollar G8/G20 boondoggle was an inevitable consequence of highly partisan, one-man decision-making that doesn't ask for costed options and is unresponsive to countray facts. Other examples abound, such as the decision to award a $16 billion fighter plane contract without competitive bids and the "tough on crime" agenda which the Globe's Jeffrey Simpson has insightfully labelled "stupid on crime". Just one of the government's 13 crimbe bills, which they claimed would cost $90 million over 5 years, will actually cost Canadians $2 billion a year. They refuse to give cost estimates for the others. Why are Kingston's prison farms being closed? And why should we go billions in debt to build super prisons at a time when crime rates are falling?
A Vision for Canada The modern Canada we cherish was largely built by past Liberal governments with a positive and inspiring vision for our future, one that sought to unite rather than divide us as a people. Liberals believe in engaging Canad with the world to everyone's benefit and in taking leadership roles in addressing looming global challenges such as climate change. Under Liberal governments, Canada was always a valued participant, never asked to leave the room so that progress could be made (as happened in Copenhagen). The Land Mines Treaty, The Montreal Protocol on the ozone layer and the International Criminal Court all made us proud to be Canadians. Liberals have with it takes to restore our global stature.
Liberals value compassion and equlity of opportunity. We believe in an evidence-based rather than idealogical approach to public policy and recognize that complex, interrelated problems don't lend themselves to simplistic solutions. It will require a far more mature and rational government than what we have today for Canad ato thrive in tomorrow's challenging, rapidly changing world.
Every Seat Counts The next election will be critical to our future as a country and a community. Previous Prime Ministers have all made the transition from partisan cmapaigning to governing on behalf of all Canadians. This one has not. For more than four years now the machinery of govenment and too many of our tax dollars have been devoted to one obsessive objective--winning that much coveted majority. Despite his fixed term legislation, few doubt that Mr. Harper will call another election any time he senses that a majority is within reach.
Canada's parlimentary system lacks that checks and balances present in the American system that prevent a US president from going "rogue". A Canadian Prime Minister with a majority who is prepared to ignore parliamentary tradition can become a dictator. Mr. Harper has demonstrated his contempt for Parliament in two prorogations and, in violation of his promises, by being the least accountability PM in recent memory. A four-year Harper majority could seriously threaten our democracy and irrversibly change our country.
In a close election, this seat could make all the difference. Voter disenchantment is Mr. Harper's best friend. Only 58% of eligible voters came out to vote, which means that he has a mandate from only 22% of the Canadian electorate. Anyone who decides not to vote in the next election is voting for a Harper majority. The stakes are too high to stand aside. Vote Liberal to take back your Canada.
Making the Difference
You can make a difference by helping to choose the right Liberal candidate to fill Peter Milliken's shoes. We ahve some very strong contenders, but it will be the duty and responsibility of our members to decide which candidate will defeat the well-established Brian Abrams. To have a vote, you must be a member before the nomination meeting is called. You can sign up immediately on our website or ask for a form at the email address listed below.
Another critical contribution that you can make is to help others in your circle see through the pervasive Conservative propaganda and better understand the urgent need for a Liberal alternative to mitigate the serious harm that Mr. Harper and his fellow ideologues are doing to our country.
Finally, you can contribute directly to our compaign by volunteering to work with us and /or becoming a donor. We are all volunteers

As the Liberal campaign continues and we have several candidates running for the position that Peter Milliken has vacated, I am fortunate enough to learn a bit more about different candidates. This time I am shedding light on Mr. Bill Flanagan. In the thread below, I will share with you information that Bill has allowed me the right to share with you. The information is on his pamphlet. I hope this will help you make the correct decisions.

Mr. Bill Flanagan wants us to know a bit about him and Liberal Values.:
I have always believed in public service and giving back. During my 19-year career at Queen’s University, I have taught and mentored generations of students. I have also served on international development projects, volunteered for provincial social service agencies and been actively involved in local issues, including saving our regional prison farm. If nominated as the Liberal Candidate for Kingston and The Islands. I will bring this ETHIC OF SERVICE to all that I do in order to build on our riding ‘s proud heritage of national leadership in federal politics.
POLITICAL VALUES
A Balanced criminal justice system
Bill is an outspoken critic of the Harper Conservatives’ narrow-minded and ideologically driven agenda on criminal justice.
“From the government’s decision to close prison farms to the proposed dissolution of the long-gun registry, the Conservatives are backing policies that will make our community less safe and more vulnerable to crime.” – Bill Flanagan, The Kingston Whig-Standard (May 12, 2010)
“In Bill’s work, both close to home and abroad, he has always strived to improve lives of others. He will make a terrific Liberal candidate for Kingston and the Islands”—Honourable Bill Graham
“We do not want to lose our prison farms and have them replaced by super-prisons built to house an ever-growing prison population. The people of Kingston have long lived with prisons in our midst, and we want these facilities to be places that provide offenders with fair-treatment and ample opportunity to develop the skills that will help them re-enter society and not reoffend. Prison farms play an important role in a humane criminal justice system” ===Bill Flanagan, testimony before the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security (March 30, 2010)
IDEAS AND ISSUES
Liberal Values
Bill has been an active resident of Kingston for many years and currently serves as vice-president of the Kingston and The Islands Federal Liberal Association.
“I joined the Liberal party at the age of 18, when I campaigned in Alberta for my uncle Jack (Horner) in the 1979 Federal election. The year before, I had seen him in action as a federal cabinet minister when I was a page in the House of Commons. Working in the House shaped my understanding of, and respect for, our parliamentary democracy.”
As a Liberal Bill supports him party’s commitment to:
· Introduce an equitable binding cap-and-trade system to fight climate change
· Create the clean-energy job of tomorrow
· Rein wasteful government spending, such as the $1-billion G8/G20 summit boondoggle.
· Develop a Global Networks Strategy, an ambitious and practical agenda whereby Canada can re-engage with the
world in countries and regions of strategic important including China, India, the Arctic region, Africa, Mexico and the
United States.
“Bill is an educational leader who is deeply committed to the betterment of others. I strongly support his Liberal nomination” = Robert A. Little Q.C. Partner, Cunningham Swan Carty Little & Bonham LLP
Democratic Values
Public Accountability
In January 2010, for the second time in just over a year. Harper prorogued Parliament. His actions were nothing less than a slap in the face to Canadians and to our democratic institutions.
“Harper tell us that he needed to shut down Parliament in order to give his government time to focus on the economy, as if Parliament and democracy are a mere hindrance to getting on with governing the country. It is a shocking abuse of Parliament and Canadian democratic traditions. We Must do all that we can to protect” = Bill Flanagan, Letter to the Editor, The Kingston Whig-Standard (January 2010)
BIO
Education
Bill was born in Edmonton in 1960 and grew up in Lacombe, Alberta, at 18, he moved to Ottawa to attend Carleton University. He graduated with a B.A. in 1982 and earned a law degree from the University of Toronto in 1985, The following year, Bill obtained a master’s degree in international economics law from the Sorbonne in Paris. He clerked for the Honourable Justice William Estey of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1986/87, after which he obtained an LL.M. from Columbia Law School in New York City in 1989
Less than one in three Canadian support the Conservatives, according to a June 2010 EKOS poll. Canadians are looking for an alternative, and as Liberals we must rise to the challenge.
Career
Bill joined the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University in 1991 and became Deal of Law in 2005. His teaching and research interests include international trade and investment law, corporate law and property law. In 2001, he founded the innovative Global Law Program at the Queen’s University Bader International Study Centre in the United Kingston. During Bill’s tenure as dean, donor support for the school has more than doubled—including $1.4 million for the law school’s first endowed merit-based scholarship-and its international programs have expanded dramatically, making Queen’s Law “Canada’s Global Law School.”
If I am nominated as the Liberal candidate for Kingston and the Islands and elected as part of the Liberal team, I will work to restore respect for democracy and balance to our criminal justice system, as well as restore Canada’s reputation as a country committed to international law, responsible environmental stewardship and global security, peace and justice.

Campaign Update August 17th, 2010
August 17th, 2010
Ideology Trumps Evidence
With the Harper Conservatives, ideology trumps evidence time and time again. The shameful closure of Canada's prison farms is only one example, as I describe in my article published in Saturday's Whig Standard reproduced below:
Bill at the prison farm rally with Lynda Prescod, supporter and
local business woman
Consequences are rolling in - Kingston Whig-Standard 14 Aug 2010
"Joining the protesters last Sunday, I stood in witness to the sad spectacle of the arrest of many of my fellow citizens who stood together to protest the Harper Conservatives’ decision to close Canada’s prison farms.
With an astonishing disregard of public opinion, the Harper Conservatives busted through this line of citizens — a determined coalition that included farmers, students, professors, seniors and the disabled — and they closed our prison farms.
This past spring, I was able to visit the prison farm at the Frontenac Institution, the site of Sunday’s demonstrations. After my visit, I published an op-ed piece in the Whig-Standard in which I described what I had seen: a highly efficient operation run by staff and inmates all of whom impressed on me the importance of the farm as a rehabilitative program. The farm supplied dairy and eggs to 13 federal prisons in Ontario and Quebec. Now that the farm is gone, all of this will have to be purchased at great expense to the government.
But the government remained undeterred by all evidence to the contrary. I can only think of one plausible rationale for the government’s decision: the Harper Conservatives are determined to get “tough on crime” come what may, and farming simply isn’t part of that ideology.
I understand that a number of senior Kingston Conservatives recently met with the prime minister to convey a desperate, last minute plea to reverse this decision. They warned Harper that his intransigence on this issue threatened their prospects of a much-desired Kingston victory in the next federal election. Their pleas fell on deaf ears.
But this rigid pattern has become all too familiar to Canadians. The government’s recent decision to scrap the mandatory long-form census is another example where ideology has trumped evidence, a move that led to the resignation of the head of Statistics Canada, Munir Sheikh. As a faculty member at Queen’s University, I was proud to see that Sheikh will now be joining the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s as a distinguished fellow and adjunct professor.
The government is likewise indifferent to the evidence that crime rates have been declining for years in Canada. Instead, the government’s “tough on crime” agenda means that our prison population will explode in the next few years. According to the parliamentary budget officer, the annual costs of correctional services will more than double by 2015-16, from $4.4 billion to $9.5 billion.
Prison farms are only one example where the Harper Conservatives are being driven by ideology rather than a careful and balanced consideration of what might constitute sensible public policy. And the consequences are rolling in — from the principled and brave resignation of senior government officials to outraged demonstrators on the streets of Kingston."
- Bill Flanagan, Federal Liberal nomination candidate for Kingston and the Islands
Thank you for your support and I hope you can join us on the campaign trail. We're having a great time, there's lots of energy and the reception has been great. Kingston wants to make sure we keep the Harper Conservatives out of this riding!

I personally know of Bittu's involvment with residents of this city. He assisted me with a complaint I had with Bill done by Utilities Kingston. Bittu personally came with me to see Jim Keech along with George Wallace. They listened and took an interest in my perspective on the billing issue. Both were NOT MY councilor at that time.
So folks, If Bittu is willing to go to bat for an ordinary citizen, just think what he would do to help all residents of this city and country.

Subject: Invitation to All-Candidates Meetings
Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2010 15:05:46 -0400
Dear Lydia,
I am writing to invite you to attend one or both of the all-candidates meetings that we are hosting in September to enable you to make the most informed decisions possible at our upcoming nomination meeting to choose a truly worthy successor to Peter Milliken and thereby contribute to keeping Kingston Liberal.
We currently have five “qualified nomination contestants” (Bill Flanagan, Bittu George, Phil Osanic, Ted Hsu and Harvey Rosen), from whom you have probably heard directly. You can see and hear from them all at one or both of the following meetings:
Ø Tuesday September 7th at 6:30 pm at the Ambassador Conference Resort, 1550 Princess Street (drive around to the back parking at the rear of the building and enter via the doors marked “”8 or “9”; and
Ø Sunday September 19th at 2:00 pm at the Holiday Inn Kingston – Waterfront, 2 Princess Street
The format of both events will be the same:
Ø An informal 30-minute “meet and greet” with the five contestants
Ø Contestant speeches – each will have up to five minutes to tell you more about themselves and their candidacy
Ø Question and answer – this will be your opportunity to ask each of them to tell you where they stand on an issue that is important to you (each will have up to one minute to respond)
You should be aware that Liberal nomination meetings are decided by preferential ballot. That means that rather than just marking an “X” beside your chosen contestant, you will be asked to rank them in order (e.g. from 1 to 5). While you only vote once, your ballot may be counted multiple times, which means that your second, third and even fourth choices could be decisive in determining who emerges as the winner. The way this works is that the contestant receiving the least number of 1st choices on the first count is eliminated. If the leading contestant doesn’t receive 50% plus 1 of the 1st choice votes, the 2nd choices on all ballots cast for the eliminated contestant are allocated to the remaining contestants. This process continues until one contestant reaches the 50% plus 1 threshold and is declared the winner. With five contestants in the race, we could potentially end up with four rounds of counting. Hence it is very important that you know where all of the contestants stand on the issues that are important to you and that you take the opportunity assess how well they respond to the questions. These meetings will be your best opportunity to do so.
The date of our nomination meeting remains uncertain as the Ontario campaign co-chairs have not yet made a final decision. I expect that it will be sometime in October.
If you have any friends, neighbours or relatives who might like a say in the outcome but are not yet members, please bring them along to the September 7th meeting so that they can see for themselves who is in the running and might consider taking out membership on the spot. Because one has to be a member prior to the nomination meeting being called in order to be eligible to vote, waiting until the second meeting on September 19th could well be too late.
Again, many thanks for your interest in and commitment to keeping Kingston Liberal! I look forward to seeing you at one or both of these very important meetings.

Hi Folks,
Just received an e-mail from Ron Hartling letting everyone know exactly how the voting procedure to fill Peter Milliken's position will occur.
Just my opinion, but wouldn't this process actually pick out a Majority Winner? If this process was actually used during every election there wouldn't be a cry throught the land that the winner of a political position got it only because few people showed up.
I wonder if more voters would come out if people knew that had this kind of choice to make and knew that even though their top choice didn't win, at least their vote counted for their second or even third.
Just a thought people, just a thought. No need to reply. Just passing the news on.

Dear Fellow Liberals,
With the Liberal Express pulling into Nova Scotia and Michael Ignatieff finishing his summer tour, I am reminded of his visit to Kingston at the beginning of the tour and how well the summer has gone for Liberals. In just six weeks, Michael attended over 140 events and travelled to 12 provinces and territories speaking to, and hearing from, thousands of Canadians.
This was in stark contrast to Harper and the Conservatives. Since the G8 and G20 meetings, we have barely heard from Harper but we have seen the results of his decisions, from the closure of the prison farms to the gutting of Canada?s census.
When Michael Ignatieff was here in Kingston he raised up the spirits of local Liberals. He drew a clear distinction between our party and the Conservatives. Liberals are the progressive, compassionate and responsible alternative to the Conservatives.
In Kingston, he spoke of the Conservatives' decision to scrap the long-form census and of closing the prison farm. He spoke of restoring Canada's international stature and passionate international engagement that has been the brand of the Liberal Party since the days of Lester Pearson. He also spoke of the importance of our arts community, a vital group of "hard-working entrepreneurs."
All summer I have heard these same concerns from members of our community. I have worked hard as a member of the Coalition to Save our Prison Farms. Although the Harper Conservatives ignored our pleas and the farms have been closed, we will continue to pressure the government. I am now the proud owner of some shares in a new cooperative that has been set up to purchase some of the dairy herd and hold the cows until they can be returned to a re-established prison farm program.
I have been an outspoken critic of the government's "law and order" agenda that will dramatically expand prison populations and double what the government spends on prisons, from $4.4 billion to $9.5 billion.
As someone who has worked on international HIV/AIDS research and development project around the world, including Russia, China and Brazil, I will work with Michael Ignatieff to restore Canada's stature abroad.
As a member of our community who cares deeply about the environment, I share Kingston's goal to become Canada's most sustainable city.
Now, Michael has pulled into Nova Scotia at the end of the tour and the most recent polls show that we are within striking distance of the Conservatives. We're on the upswing and these are dark days for the Conservatives!
We are part of that upswing here in Kingston. The people in our community have had enough of Conservative mis-rule.
With all of the surrounding ridings held by the Conservatives, we have to ensure that our island of red in the sea of blue stays Liberal!
Join me in making sure that we keep Kingston and the Islands Liberal and form a progressive, compassionate and responsible government.

Ted's Policies
Two of Ted's Policies:
Policy#1
Principle: The market economy is an immensely useful tool for the efficient allocation of resources and the creation of wealth. But, it only works if prices reflect reality, and costs and risks are not hidden. I believe in honest accounting and long-term thinking.
Policy: Don't make people pay the price for pollution if they didn't cause it. Remove the ability to pollute for free. By whatever system is politically viable, put a price on pollution, such as greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels. The price can start out low. The actual magnitude of the price is not as important as credibly guaranteeing that this price will be in place forever, and will steadily increase over time. This will help minimize costs and maximize benefits as the economy grows in a new and more sustainable direction.
Result: Not only will we be protecting our natural environment and the riches that it provides, it's almost always the case that industry itself becomes more innovative and efficient as it is challenged and given an incentive to steadily reduce pollution. This drive to innovation is good for our corporate culture and competitiveness. The cost of reducing pollution will be less than predicted.
Policy#2
Principle: In the end, the government, now or in the future, has to pay for everything it does. Resources are always limited and if we spend money on one thing, we have to realize that we're not able to spend money on something else. Conversely, if we can deliver better services at lower cost, we'll be able to improve other services or cut taxes.
Policy: Even though health care delivery is mostly a provincial jurisdiction, with the important exceptions of aboriginal Canadians and pharmaceuticals, there are significant areas that the federal government should get involved in. The question of how we can get Canadians, especially young Canadians, to adopt more physically active, healthy lifestyles transcends provincial borders. So is, for example, reducing the amount of salt and refined sugar in Canadian diets. We know that poverty is an important determinant of poor health and the federal government should coordinate health improvement programs with poverty programs. All of these ideas should lead to inexpensive ways of preventing very expensive health care burdens in the future. I believe that we must shift some of our health care spending into these programs.
Result: Health care is such a large and growing part of our governments' budgets that good management of health care costs will positively impact everything else we would like our government to do, including cutting taxes if that's what is needed. Our children will be healthier and lead more productive lives when they grow up.

Ted Hsu
Hello and welcome to new or returning readers. Thanks for giving us another moment of your time. This newsletter is to inform you about my candidacy to succeed the Hon. Peter Milliken, and the current progress of our campaign. This week, I have chosen to send you two policy ideas of mine, one on the federal government's role in health care, and the other on an exciting affordable housing initiative.
Please feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, neighbours, and colleagues.
This is another major week in the nomination race. Membership cutoff could come at any time, so please submit all membership forms as soon as possible. Also, the second All-Candidates Debate is set to be held this coming Sunday, September 19th, at 2pm at the Holiday Inn downtown.
I am sure you are aware of the recent flood disaster in Pakistan, and I encourage you to support Canadian relief efforts. As the Hon. John Gerretsen said in his speech at the Pakistan Canada Association of Kingston fund raising dinner, flooding is a disaster that moves more slowly than earthquakes, or tsunamis, so they receive less attention, but Pakistan still needs our help. I have more information below.
I invite everyone to check out our website at www.tedhsu.ca, which has become a valuable database of all things related to our campaign. The speech I gave at Sunday in the Park with Ted a couple weeks ago at Lake Ontario Park is just one of the many resources available on our website.
Warmest regards,

Dear Fellow Liberals,
We had a terrific turnout at the all-candidates meeting last week, with over 300 people attending - a powerful indication that the Liberal Party is strong in Kingston and the Islands. We are also gaining strength nationally, energized by Michael Ignatieff’s recent summer tour. We are closing in on the Harper Conservatives.
In my speech last week, I lambasted the Harper Conservatives’ record on prison farms, the environment, census, the long gun registry and the treatment of veterans.
I am seeking the nomination because I don’t like the direction our country is going in, run by a Prime Minister who is an angry outsider driven by a narrow ideological agenda that is foreign to the values of most Canadians.
As a proud Liberal all my life, I believe in a progressive, compassionate and responsible alternative - a Liberal alternative.
I talked about my values, including fiscal responsibility; balance in our criminal justice system; and sharing the goal to make Kingston “Canada’s most sustainable city” – including environmental sustainability, economic growth, cultural vitality and social equity.
We all know that the Harper Conservatives are actively targeting this riding. To keep the riding Liberal, we need a candidate with a proven track record of advocacy for Kingston and the Islands.
In my case, this has been no better demonstrated than my leadership on the prison farm issue – among all the other candidates, I have been the clear leader on this issue. Early on, I made the effort to visit the farm, wrote about my visit in the Whig, was invited by the Coalition to speak speaking a various prison farm events, and invited to testify in Ottawa in support of saving the farms.
The Harper Conservatives must be held accountable for the Harper Conservatives mis-management of our country and their indifference to our community.
I believe that I am the candidate that has the drive and determination to fight the battle and hold the riding. I am ready to defend and promote the interests of our community at every opportunity.
I hope that you will be able to attend the second all-candidates meeting this Sunday. For further details, see http://kingston.liberal.ca/all-candidates-meetings/

Wednesday September 22nd, 2010
Dear Fellow Liberals,
Last week, Liberals held two very well attended all-candidates meetings. The Kingston Women's Liberal Association hosted the first meeting, with over 50 attending, and over 300 attended the second meeting on Sunday. There remains great interest in the nomination race in Kingston and the Islands!
Maternal Health and Women's Rights
Responding to a question from the audience at the Sunday meeting, I affirmed my position that maternal health includes reproductive choice. The Harper Conservatives have proposed a maternal health initiative for the developing world that does not include reproductive choice. Tens of thousands of women in the developing world die every year from unsafe illegal abortions. In my view, it is impossible to effectively promote maternal health in the developing world without also supporting reproductive choice.
Educator
At the meeting, I also talked about my role as an educator, having taught at Queen's University for the past 19 years. I come from a family of five children and both my parents were schoolteachers who always placed great importance on learning. Although ours was a family of modest means, all five children were able to pursue our dreams and attend university.
With tuition fees continuing to rise rapidly, I posed the question of whether my family today would have the same opportunity we did when we were kids?
As Liberals, we are committed to equal opportunity for all, especially in education, and this is another reason why I am proud to call myself a Liberal. We need to ensure that the programs and supports are in place to ensure that education remains accessible to all Canadians.
Keeping the Riding Red
We all know that the Harper Conservatives are actively targeting this riding. To hold this riding in the next election, we need a candidate who can speak to the broad range of issues voters care about. The election will be about more than on single issue such as the environment, important as that is. We also need:
a candidate who has a track record of speaking out on criminal justice matters and our prisons,
a candidate who cares about education,
a candidate who understands that voters are deeply worried about the economy, health care, and how we are going to care for an aging population,
a candidate with years of experience in international development work and who cares about Canada's reputation abroad,
a candidate who is fluently bilingual and can represent Kingston and the Islands on the national stage,
a candidate who understands that maternal health includes reproductive choice.
I am deeply committed to the fight to hold our riding and keep it Liberal. To win, we will a need a broad and inclusive message that will bring back all those voters we lost in the last election where we coming dangerously close to a Conservative victory in Kingston and the Islands.
I believe that I am the candidate who has the record and the platform that will most broadly appeal to the voters in Kingston and the Islands.
I ask for your support in this nomination contest and look forward to working with all of you in the next election where we will turn back the tide of the Harper Conservatives and offer Canadians a progressive, compassionate and responsible alternative.

Welcome and thank you for giving us a moment of your time. This newsletter is to inform you about me as a candidate and the current progress of our campaign.
News Items:
The membership cutoff has not been announced yet, so all the contestants are still signing up supporters to join the Party, as we are. The best guess we have is that the nomination meeting will be in the second half of October.
John Clements, campaign manager for Peter Milliken and John Gerretsen's past campaigns has endorsed Ted Hsu and given us permission to make that public. "..you will be number one on my ballot", he said.
This week, I have chosen to send you my economic vision for Kingston and the Islands.
Please feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, neighbours, and colleagues.
Check out our website at www.tedhsu.ca, especially if you are interested in hearing the speech I gave at the first All-Candidates meeting and at "Sunday in the Park with Ted".
Thank you to everyone who came to the second All-Candidates meeting last Sunday. It was a success, and a great opportunity for the contestants to show the membership a little more about what they stand for.
I'd like to conclude with an excerpt from the speech I gave at the second meeting:
We need a candidate who can motivate and inspire people to get up and leave their homes and come out to vote and defeat a government that is acting against their interests.
I know that many of you see the high quality of contestants we have up here, but are trying to figure out which one of us has the best chance to defeat Brian Abrams and the Conservatives.
So why vote for Ted Hsu?
You need a candidate who has already created a vibrant community of supporters in Kingston and the Islands and is ready to fight the next election.
As the Executive Director of SWITCH, Kingston's sustainable energy association, I've tripled the membership and meeting attendance numbers and operating budget over the last three years.
During this nomination campaign I've proven my ability to fund-raise by raising money from over 65 donors so that our campaign will be able to spend the maximum allowed by Elections Canada in this nomination contest.
Our campaign has over 100 volunteers and recruiters working to spread the word and build support. We've taken online grassroots campaigning and fundraising to a new level for Kingston and the Islands. We've held nearly 50 "coffee parties" and public meetings to attract new supporters (with more to come). I've even gone out and already introduced myself to different people and communities beyond the Liberal Party like Brian Abrams' parents at their church.
...and our campaign even has a song.
Warmest regards,
Ted

From Ted's Biography
Q: I've heard some of the other candidates talk a lot about what they have studied, or what their experiences are. What makes you qualified for the job?
A: I started off my post-secondary studies at Queen's University earning a BSc in Physics, and then went to Princeton, where I earned a PhD also in Physics. I engaged in post-doctoral research, and have 25 published research papers.
I worked as an Executive Director for the global financial services firm, Morgan Stanley, in Tokyo, where I was responsible for a $50 million business line. I learned about international finance and the global economy through work at the Banque Nationale de Paris as a researcher in Paris, and Philadelphia.
After working abroad, I came back home to Kingston. Not because of a job opportunity, but because this is where I want to raise my family. Since coming back, I have been a stay-at-home Dad, as well as the Executive Director of SWITCH, Kingston's Alternative Energy Cluster. Here, I have worked directly in job creation, and attracting investment to Kingston and the Islands in the green energy sector.
Other abilities that I have, that will help me in being our MP, include being fluent in French and Mandarin Chinese. I have a broad base of support in Kingston that crosses party lines. I am an uncommon candidate, and my varied background allows me to represent the various communities in Kingston that I have been a part of, from research and education, business, parenting, entrepreneurs, environmentalists, and everything in between.
Ted's Vision
A little glimpse into the economic future of Kingston that Ted will work for:
Kingston and the Islands will build on its economic strengths: research and educational institutions, a vibrant creative class and arts community, a significant public sector to smooth the effects of the business cycle, a central location and superior quality of life, ties to rural areas, leadership in sustainable energy...
...and we will add to it some new things: better connections to sources of private financing and management resources for innovative ventures, more encouragement of locally based but potentially international commercial ventures from the retention of intellectual property and human talent from Kingston's research and educational institutions, a somewhat more entrepreneurial, innovative, progressive, and less risk-averse culture...
...which will lead to: sustainable economic growth, growth in the commercial and industrial sector, lower residential property taxes over time, opportunities for young people growing up in Kingston and the Islands to find good jobs here at home, the ability to preserve and pass on Kingston's heritage, no excuse for not serving the disadvantaged in Kingston & the Islands.
The last piece is important. We must have sustainable economic growth that does not leave behind segments of our society. Let us have not just prosperity, but prosperity with a purpose. And let it be prosperity that is fair to all Canadians, and is fair to our children and grandchildren.

BILL FLANAGAN
Dear Fellow Liberals,
Thank you for all your support so far. Every week our team is growing and I am honoured to accept the endorsements of two more proud Liberals:
"At the last all-candidates debate, in response to a direct question from Gillian Sadinsky, Bill strongly affirmed that he supports reproductive choice for women. Both Ted Hsu and Bittu George replied that they were "pro-life."
After spending many years as an advocate in support of Dr. Morgantaler and his work to reform Canada's abortion laws, I am passionately committed to protecting a women's right to choose. For me, it is impossible to support any Liberal candidate who is not fully committed to a woman's choice, both in Canada and abroad.
Bill's unequivocal pro-choice position, and his commitment to the full spectrum of maternal health, strongly reaffirmed my support of his candidacy."
Lana Coe,
Treasurer, Eastern Ontario Women’s Liberal Association
-----
"I support Bill because he can win the next election against Brian Abrams and the Conservative Party. Bill knows the issues and can think on his feet. As Dean of Law, he has already demonstrated the high level of industry and competence necessary to represent the people of Kingston and the Islands."

Save the Prison Farm: Update
Last week here in Kingston I stood with Mark Holland [Photo to right], the Liberal Party's Public Safety Critic, as he reiterated the Liberal's strong commitment to restore Canada's prison farm system. This is a commitment I proudly share and have been fighting for months to advance.
The ideologically-driven actions of the Harper Conservatives ignore not just the will of Parliamentary Committees and experts, but also the vast majority of the people of Kingston who have called on the government to reverse their short-sighted decision.
Eliminating this renowned rehabilitation program is a mistake and as the Liberal candidate for Kingston and the Islands I would continue to fight to see this program restored.
Gun Registry (saves) Lives!
Last week saw a huge victory for women's rights advocates, our police forces, victims groups, medical experts and all Canadians as the Liberal Party won the Parliamentary vote to keep the life-saving gun registry alive.
The entire Liberal caucus sided with these groups in a unanimous display of solidarity. Now it's time to move forward and fix the registry so that it works for both rural and urban Canadians.
The Harper Conservatives like to claim they are "tough on crime" but their actions show otherwise. Like our prison farms, I believe the gun registry has an important role to play in our justice system and serves as a crucial tool which police in Kingston and across the country rely on daily. That's why I have been and will always continue to be a strong advocate for the gun registry.
News Item: Shai Dubey Celebrating Time as KEDCO Chair
This Wednesday, Bill will attend a dinner at the Vimy Officers' Mess to celebrate Shai Dubey's time as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Kingston Economic Development Corporation. Kingston has benefited from Shai's years of dedicated service and Bill is proud to have had him as a former student.
News Item: Bill Flanagan Featured in Queen's Journal Article
Check out Rachel Kuper's article in the Queen's University Journal on Bill entitled "Rules of engagement":
In the late '80s the world started to find out about HIV/AIDS and people were scared. "This was something that required a huge amount of political activism," he said. "I became quite involved in a group called ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power)." In so doing, he learned how engaging in politics could lead to change... [read more]
I look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail!

Dear Fellow Liberals,
Every week our team is growing in strength because of dedicated, passionate supporters such as yourself. Thank you. I am honoured to receive the endorsement of these two individuals who have served in the Canadian Forces. We owe a debt of gratitude to them and all the brave men and women of the Canadian Forces who serve with honour and distinction, at home and abroad.
I have known Bill for over 30 years. We first met in Lahr, Germany where his father was the Superintendent of Schools for Canadian Forces Europe and I was a Gunner with 1st Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. Bill has continually demonstrated a strong social conscious as reflected in his recognition and ongoing support of Canada's veterans and all Canadian Forces' personnel who sacrifice so much in support of Canada. I know that he will be a vocal advocate for all men and women who serve our country. It is with sincere pleasure that I strongly support Bill's nomination to be the next Liberal candidate for Kingston and the Islands."

"After careful consideration of all of the candidates vying for the nomination for the Kingston and the Islands seat, I have decided to support Bill Flanagan. His understanding of my needs, and the issues facing Canadian veterans both new and old is impressive. He is committed to fighting for all veterans, and I know that I can count on him to fight hard in our best interests."

Our Veterans
Regardless of political stripe, we all support our veterans and are grateful for the sacrifices they make to serve our country. Sadly, we have been letting our veterans down and this is a wrong that must be made right. I know this is especially unacceptable to the people of Kingston, a city home to a proud military history and tradition.
When the New Veterans Charter became law in 2005 it was probably passed with the best of intentions by Members of Parliament. However, the provisions contained in the new Charter have not stood up to the present day realities. The reality is, Canada is in a war, and our Canadian Forces personnel are being injured and killed during their service in Afghanistan. The Charter was written at a time of relative peace when the Veterans of past wars were diminishing in number and the concerns of the day were with the requirements of veterans who had served in the relative security of a "peace- time" army. I think that there is sufficient evidence that this Charter is not meeting the requirements of our veterans; that is certainly the impression I get when talking to our veterans in Kingston. I will strongly support any actions taken to redress these shortfalls, including the drafting of a new Veterans Charter if that is what is required.
On the eve of the return of Parliament, in the wake of their shameful treatment of outspoken Veterans Ombudsman Colonel Pat Stogran, the Conservative government announced new benefits to ward off criticism about their treatment of veterans. This is a government that does not like to hear criticism; sadly if they had taken the time to judge Colonel Stogran's criticisms on its merits they would understand the severity of the issue at hand (read more). The "enhanced benefits" offered by the Conservatives are paltry and the lump-sum payouts problematic. They have not even made it clear whether they will retroactively apply to veterans who have served in Afghanistan since our engagement there began. If not, that would be a travesty and one that no Canadian should stand for.
Canadian veterans need benefits that meet the realities of a Canada engaged in conflict. They must have the support of the government and their political leaders. If I am successful in my bid to become the next Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, I will commit to fighting on behalf of our veterans, as well as the men and women currently serving in our armed forces.

Canada's future in the world
A full-scale review of Canada's National Security, Defence and Foreign Policy has not taken place since the 1990's. We are engaged in a piecemeal approach to foreign policy, undertaking initiatives and spending on programs with no real overarching vision or plan.
I believe that in order for the Canada of tomorrow to be relevant in the world we must ask ourselves the question: what role do we want to play in the world and how can we best play it?
How we engage with the world tomorrow must reflect our interests, values and capabilities. To that end I believe we must undertake a comprehensive review of our Foreign Policy and National Security Policy. This is something the Liberal Party of Canada has already begun under Michael Ignatieff.
I am proud to say that a Liberal government would: strengthen relationships with China and rising economic powers such as India and Brazil; it would pursue a new, multilateral agreement on the Arctic; reverse the Conservative's withdrawal from Africa, re-engaging in our assistance to that region; undertake a branding Canada initiative to promote trade and tourism abroad; make empowering women in the developing world an over-arching priority for our development assistance; and re-establish Canadian credibility and leadership on the environment.
I want to ensure that the people of Kingston and the Islands have their say. If I am fortunate enough to represent this riding in Ottawa, I will ensure that Kingston plays its role in shaping the Canada of tomorrow, at home and abroad.

From Ted's Biography
I'd like to tell you about my commitment to working for our riding association and the Liberal Party.
For the past four years, I have served as the treasurer and financial agent for the Kingston and the Islands Federal Liberal Association, as well as being an active and integral member of our Policy Committee. Through my Policy Committee work, I have been one of those members trying to reform the Liberal Party's policy process by using social networking technology on the internet.
In the 2007 and 2008 provincial and federal Liberal campaigns, I went door to door canvassing and worked the phones calling voters.
These combined experiences of working for the riding association and interacting with voters and campaign workers mean that I know the current strengths and weaknesses of our riding association and what work needs to be done to prepare us to win the next election. Kingston and the Islands Liberals need a candidate who knows the first step to take after the nomination meeting.
Policy Talk Announcement
The Policy and Values section of www.tedhsu.ca is being improved. I will alert you as soon as the new page is ready, so that you can read my thoughts on many topics, from Veterans' Affairs to Affordable Housing.
Here is a sample:
What's Wrong with Lump Sum Payments in the New Veteran's Charter?
I grew up in a family where every male in my father's generation did military service and is proud of it (this would be in China/Taiwan - our family immigrated to Canada in 1964). My father-in-law is a retired naval veteran. I respect those who serve their country in uniform, and I believe in taking care of them.
There is one area in the current controversy over the treatment of veterans where I have some expertise. I have a strong view on the lump sum payments that were proposed under the New Veterans Charter. As somebody who has worked in the financial and investment world, I know that the biggest risk in saving for your retirement is NOT what returns you will get on your investment. The biggest risk is how long you will live. Often people don't appreciate this point. These lump sum payments are being proposed to limit the government's fiscal liability because they don't know how long the injured veterans will live. However, the government is transferring to injured veterans precisely the risk that the veterans most need help with - the risk of how long they will live.
The government's risk is not that uncertain. Its risk is spread out over lots of people. That's the whole point of how life insurance companies manage to do business. They don't know when a particular person will die, but they have a very good idea of how long a large group of people will live on average. Clearly it's much better, purely from a financial risk point of view, for the government to be shouldering the risk and not the individual injured veteran. The government's risk is mitigated by diversification, and the individual veteran's risk is not. Veterans have already put their lives at risk. This is one risk the government should shoulder for them.

Lydia --
Everywhere he went this summer, Michael Ignatieff invited Canadians into the Big Red Tent.
Each time the bus pulled into an event in one of the 13 provinces and territories he visited, the Big Red Tent grew a little bit bigger. Canadians, shut out by the Harper government, came to see what we were about — “to kick our tires” as Michael put it.
We need to keep bringing progressive Canadians from the left and the right into the tent this fall — that’s why Michael is hosting town halls across the country and that’s why I’d like to share something with you.
If you have friends, family, or colleagues that didn’t have a chance to meet Michael Ignatieff at one of the 160+ events this summer, then send them this video and introduce them to the good and decent man leading the party at the centre of Canadian politics.
There’s another good reason I need you to help me make this video go viral.
When the next wave of Conservative attacks come — and knowing Stephen Harper, they will come sooner rather than later — we need to be ready.
We can blunt their assault by making sure everyone we know has watched and shared this video. Because then, Canadians will be able to witness for themselves the strength, the sincerity, and the integrity of the man I’m proud to call both my Leader and my friend.
They’ll see a Leader who respects them. Who listens. Who takes their questions every chance he gets — like he’s doing each week in person and online at our Open mike town halls.
They’ll see a party that offers a progressive, compassionate and responsible alternative to Stephen Harper’s politics of division. A party that chooses families over more corporate tax cuts, and is fighting for their priorities in Ottawa — pensions, health care, learning and jobs.
And they’ll learn about our policies, like the new Liberal Family Care Plan to support caregivers and our Global Networks Strategy to restore Canada’s reputation in the world.
But instead all they’ll see is the Conservative caricature of us — unless you take a few minutes to share the video and say "Come on in to the Big Red Tent!"
Thank you.

Dear Fellow Liberals,
“Which of the contestants seeking our support is best positioned to preserve this Liberal seat?” The answer is not only important for this community but for our nation as well. The answer is in your hands.
The future of the Federal Riding of Kingston and the Islands may very well depend on each of us completing the preferential ballot. I am asking to be your first choice, but should you be firmly committed to one of my colleges, you can still give your second vote to a contestant who has already won four elections and whose name and accomplishments are recognized by tens of thousands of the riding’s constituents.
We know that name recognition alone will not be enough. Therefore in speaking to my other strengths as outlined in the enclosed material I do ask you to measure them objectively against those of my colleagues.
It matters to me that I fulfill my promises to those who put their trust in me. My father always believed and taught me that your word is your bond. A promise made is one I am honour-bound to keep.
With your help I can serve this great and compassionate nation, returning it to its place of honour and leadership among the community of nations. As your MP, I can continue to use my lengthy experience in public life to effectively represent the interests of Kingston and the Islands and provide a strong voice in Ottawa for the people of this riding. With your help we can hold this riding and be part of a Liberal team that forms a government that respects and restores the values in which Canadians believe.
I have done my level best to serve Kingston, where I was born and educated and chose to live and raise my family. I love this community – and am grateful for the privilege of serving in public life at the municipal level for 13 years. I am now asking for your support so that I might serve Canada with the same energy, passion and commitment.
Sincerely,
Harvey Rosen

HARVEY ROSEN’S VIEWS
Environment:I am committed to promotion of the green energy sector nationwide with a goal of making Kingston Canada’s most sustainable city. I support financial incentives such as Advanced Renewable Tariffs and the implementation as well as proper government oversight of policies such as Cap and Trade for Carbon and other hazardous emissions.
Economy:I will work to correct the CPP and other pension legislation so that all Canadian retirees will receive a liveable income.
Foreign Policy:I support the 0.7% pledge made by the Canadian Government to International Development. Canada must once again take a leadership role in aiding countries that are less able to develop their own education and health systems, as well as their broader economics.
Corrections:I believe in the rehabilitation of inmates through fulfilling work, education and training in an effort to avoid repeated incarceration leading to an increase in the scale of our prison system.

Biographical Information
I was born in Edmonton in 1960 and raised in Burnaby, British Columbia. I received a B.A. (History) degree in 1987 from U.B.C., during which time I also worked full-time with the Canadian National Railways.
I entered the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University in 1988. After working on Bay Street, I set up my own law firm in Kingston in 1994. I received a Master of Laws degree from Queen’s University in 2002.
From 1986 to 1997 I was also employed as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Land Forces, Primary Reserve. My military duties included being a Logistic Officer, Infantry Officer and Marksmanship competitor and coach.
I was married in 1997 and have two children aged 8 and 10. My wife Lisa currently sits on Kingston City Council.
Potential Election Issues
Child Care: The last Liberal government proposed a national child care program modeled after the Quebec child care plan. Parents pay $7.00 a day and the Province of Quebec pays the rest. The Liberal program had already received agreements in principle with the provinces and 74% of Canadian supported it.
Harper’s Conservatives cancelled the program and replaced it with a $100.00 per month cheque to families with pre-school children. This is a band-aid solution rather than a national program that actually delivers needed services. My family paid $1,600.00 per month in pre-school daycare. We currently pay $400.00 per month in after school day care.
I believe that the early development of children’s cognitive, language, academic, behavioural and social skills is critical to Canada’s future. A national government run program that delivers the services needed for early childhood development is absolutely necessary. Our children are the future of Canada.
Education: Simply put, the estimated 1.4 Billion dollars spent on the recent G8-G20 conferences could have provided 1,400 million dollar educational and research grants. Liberals make different choices in Canada.
Prison Farms: A big part of the government’s mandate is to “correct” an inmate’s wrongful behaviour through rehabilitation programs during incarceration. Prison farms were an outstanding productive and proven rehabilitative tool.
We have already been promised that the next Liberal Government will restore the Prison Farm system. However, Harper’s Government has already leased the farm lands at Pittsburgh Institution for five years, and plans to lease the Frontenac Institution farm lands in early 2011.
Immigration: Once a person is approved by Citizenship and Immigration there is no real “bridging” assistance on arrival to Canada. There are members of this community today with professional credentials who found that once they left the airport they were simply “on their own”. I will work to change this.
We must also repair the system of assessing refugee claims. We cannot allow those who simply arrive at our borders to automatically receive Canadian citizenship. However, we must also be willing and capable of making the compassionate decision of recognizing extreme hardship and political repression in foreign lands. True Liberals are committed to helping those who cannot help themselves.
Please try to find a moment to visit my website.
You will learn that I have close ties to the legal and academic communities in Kingston. I have been a practicing lawyer for 18 years and have been teaching for many years at the Queen’s School of Business, Queen’s Faculty of Law, and at St. Lawrence College.
As a retired Officer, I have very strong ties and connections to the Canadian Armed Forces in Kingston. I also spent more than a decade in the organized Canadian Labour force as a full-time employee with C.N. Rail.
If selected by you as the next Liberal Candidate, I will bring all of my knowledge, training and experience to the coming federal election.
I give you my pledge to work tirelessly to keep Kingston and the Islands Liberal.
LIBERAL PARTY OF CANADA
I am a lifelong Liberal and have been a member of the Kingston and the Islands Federal Liberal Association since making Kingston my home in 1994. Many of you will recall that I was President of our association during the 2005-2006 term.
I have been a delegate to every Leadership and Biennial Convention in recent memory. My involvement with and commitment to the Liberal Party of Canada comes from my genuine belief and commitment to liberal values and ideals. I am a complete believer and proponent of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The outlook for our party today is better than it has been in many years. We move towards the next federal election under the intelligent leadership of Michael Ignatieff, against the backdrop of failing Harper Conservatism. However, we must not take 22 years of Liberal hold on this riding for granted.

Lydia --
What do you think makes more sense for Canadian families right now? Borrowing $6-billion for more tax breaks to our largest corporations? Or targeted, costed investments to ease the economic burden on your family?
Liberals get it. You told us that you want Ottawa focused on your family’s priorities: health and family care, pensions, learning and jobs. That’s why this week, I joined the Liberal Party’s economic team to present Canadians with a choice: the Liberal plan to provide hope to middle class families, or more Conservative waste and mismanagement.
We want to ease the economic pressures you’re facing with strategic investments like the new Liberal Family Care Plan, while reducing the Conservatives’ record deficit through the most balanced and responsible fiscal plan of any party. Fiscal responsibility is part of our Liberal brand, and unlike Mr. Harper, we actually have a track record to prove it.
We’re offering Canadians prudent, balanced and clear economic choices. But we can’t make them a reality on our own — You are the key to our success. Through a donation of $25, $50 or more, you can help us put Canada back on a responsible and progressive track.
Stephen Harper has made his choice. He’s leaving your family to fend for itself, and adding to his record deficit by wasting money on mega-prisons, a fake lake, untendered contracts for fighter jets, and more tax breaks using borrowed money. Those are his priorities.
If you don’t think that’s good enough, there is an alternative. A Liberal government will make targeted, strategic investments in Canadian families while leaving a lasting economic legacy for Canada:
* Helping families balance work and home care;
* Keeping seniors out of poverty through retirement security;
* Providing the skills needed to create the jobs of tomorrow; and
* Fostering global networks that expand our trading relationships.
In the next election, Canadians will be faced with a choice between the Conservatives’ misleading fiscal projections, divisive politics, and obsessive information control OR the Liberal alternative that will put Canadian families first while reducing the Conservative deficit.
The choice is yours. Please make a donation today. Make an investment of $25, $50 or more in Canada’s future – so we can deliver on our promise to you – a Canada we can all be proud of.
Thanks –
Ralph
P.S. Remember that you will get as much as 75% of your gift back at tax time. A $100 donation will cost you as little as $25 and the net cost of your $50 donation is only $12.50. That’s a small price to pay for a Canada we can be proud of.

Sunday, October 24th 2010
Dear Fellow Liberals,
Nomination day is coming up quickly and my campaign team has been hard at work. Among my many volunteers and supporters, seniors have been among the most dedicated and hard-working. In this newsletter, I would like to talk a bit about seniors and some of the many issues seniors care about.
I am delighted to have the support of a senior whom we all know and love, Lillian Wade, a retired former staff member in Peter Milliken's office.
"Having spent many years working with Peter Milliken I know what a good MP is required to do. Now that Peter is retiring I am supporting Bill Flanagan because I think he is better suited for that job than any of the other candidates. Bill will work tirelessly for us and I'm glad he has taken such an interest in the matters that affect seniors such as me."
- Lillian Wade, Kingston resident
Seniors are a vitally important part of our community, but many of our seniors are struggling to make ends meet. The reality is that for many, Old Age Security payments are not enough, and all too often pension payments cannot cover the rising cost of living. I believe that the Canadian government must act to help seniors. They built our country and now Canada needs to be there for them. I'm proud to have received the support of many seniors from Kingston and promise to always work hard on their behalf.
The Liberal Family Care Plan
Seniors also face significant challenges dealing with income security, health, safety, and mobility. Addressing the unique needs of our seniors means more than just raising Old Age Security payments. That's why I'm so proud of the recently released Liberal Family Care Plan which will invest $1-billion annually to help address many of the challenges associated with aging.
This plan will assist families by helping family caregivers with the cost of caring for sick or aging loved ones at home. I believe Canadians want choices when it comes to caring for their families. Providing care at home allows our loved ones to live in dignity as they face their health challenges with their families. Making family care easier and more affordable will also help to contain health care costs in the long run.
Liberals will create a new six-month Family Care Employment Insurance benefit, similar to the EI parental leave benefit, so that more Canadians can care for family members at home without having to quit their jobs or juggle part-time work with full-time care responsibilities.
There will also be a Family Care Tax Benefit, modeled on the Child Tax Benefit, to help low and middle income family caregivers who provide essential care to a family member at home.
I believe government should be compassionate and that it should help Canadians during times of need. That's why I'm a Liberal, and why I believe in the Liberal Family Care Plan
Saving for Retirement
There's a disturbing trend occurring across our country - Canadians are not saving enough for their retirement. Often, when they do try and save, their investments are not guaranteed as we have seen with the recent Nortel pension crisis or as a result of stock market fluctuations.
I believe that the Canadian government must help Canadians better save for retirement. Liberals have always worked to support Canadians in their retirement plans, since the creation and strengthening of the Canada Pension Plan.
Yet, more must be done. 75% of Canadians working in the private sector have no registered pension plan. And while the CPP covers 93% of workers, it is not sufficient on its own. As household debt continues to soar and as the costs associated with caring for our aging seniors only becomes more expensive, we must look for solutions.
Three proposals I have advocated for are:
1. The Liberal plan to create a Supplementary Canada Pension Plan which would make saving for retirement easier;
2. The Liberal bill currently before the Senate (S-216) which would protect the savings of some of the most vulnerable pensioners - those
on long-term disability; and
3. Allowing for the option of growing pension assets through the CPP so that if a business does goes bankrupt people's savings are
protected.
Bill on the Campaign Trail
Bill, campaigning earlier this month along with dedicated volunteer Chris Jackson, participated in the Transitioning K-Town to 350 day-of-action.
The event collected canned and dried goods to donate to the local food bank for the Thanksgiving Weekend in a show of community solitary for the 350.org Campaign and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
www.350.org seeks to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere to below 350 parts per million - the level leading scientists argue is necessary to stop further environmental degradation and climate change.
Bill attended the Mayoralty All-Candidates Meeting last week, hosted by Imagine Kingston. Here he is chatting with Pat Doyle, one of many the terrific campaign volunteers who have been helping Bill out with the nomination contest.
I look forward to seeing you on nomination day!

Team Ted Tasks & T-Shirts
October 24, 2010
Dear Lydia,
As we get close to Nomination Day (Sunday November 7 at the K-Rock Centre) , there are many tasks that need to be completed. we need your help more than ever to ensure the successful conclusion of the Campaign.
Tuesdays with Team Ted
Working groups will focus on the priority tasks of the campaign.
We have booked space at Ongwanada Resource Centre, 191 Portsmouth Avenue.
On Tuesday October 26, we will meet from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
Refreshments provided.
What can you do to help on Tuesday October 26?
1. Callers, please drop off your completed call lists. (We still have a few more sheets that need to be called.)
2. We need to prepare a letter to all members. We have a template that needs to be adapted. Join a group to complete this task. Do you have a second (or third) language? We would like to personalize this letter by including a paragraph in a member's first language when it is known to us. Let us know if you can help or if you know someone else who can.
3. We need to identify a number of volunteers who would be willing to provide rides to the Nomination Event. We also need a volunteer to coordinate the requests and the drivers.
TEAM TED T-Shirts
A number of supporters have indicated they would like to buy a Team Ted t-shirt. We have ordered a new supply. They will be available by the end of the week for $10/shirt. Reply to this email to order a shirt.
We are hoping that our supporters will wear the shirts and buttons at the Nomination Event.
Once again, thank you for your help.

Welcome to all new and returning readers. This week, in the "From My Bio" section below, I'd like to talk about job creation.
I'd also like to extend a special welcome to the large number of Queen's students who recently joined the Liberal family in Kingston and the Islands, thanks to the hard work of the Queen's University Liberal Association. I look forward to having the opportunity to tell you my message and to ask for your support.
This is an exciting time for the campaign. The nomination meeting has been called and the membership cutoff date has passed. The five contestants will now be trying to win the support of the roughly 2800 Liberal Party members eligible to vote on nomination day.
This week, please have a look at the updated Values and Platform page of our website, www.tedhsu.ca. The website is a great resource for undecided voters, as well as those of you who are now making the important decision about which contestants should be your second and third choices.
At the nomination meeting you will be making a decision that affects the future of your country. The meeting is on Sunday, Nov. 7, at the K-Rock Centre. It will be held from 1:30 pm to 7:30 pm with speeches at the beginning and voting taking place from about 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Remember that you have to be physically present to vote.

I'd like to tell you about my work at SWITCH - Kingston's Sustainable Energy Association http://www.switchkingston.ca/
A video about SWITCH
As Executive Director of SWITCH, Ted was invited to a meeting earlier this month to discuss funding opportunities for collaboration between university researchers and innovative companies
http://www.switchkingston.ca/
I have been the Executive Director of SWITCH for the past three years. Here, I have applied my scientific, business, and environmental background towards the goal of creating jobs in, and attracting investment to, the green energy sector in Kingston and the Islands.
SWITCH's mission is to make this region a centre for sustainable energy. It is a not-for-profit association that is focused on the energy economy and on local economic growth in the sustainable energy sector, including advocacy, research, education and training, and business development.
It is not surprising that economic growth in the green energy sector has been a topic of discussion in the current municipal election. Several of the candidates for the municipal election in Kingston have sought my advice on this issue as they prepared for their campaigns. I was able to advise them about the job creation that has, can, and will happen in Kingston. My work at SWITCH has directly resulted in creating jobs in a field of work that will help improve our economy and the natural environment in which our kids will live.
SWITCH is an organization that proves that economic health goes hand-in-hand with sustainability.
Running SWITCH requires understanding the needs, challenges, and opportunities of the 50 out of 140 members of SWITCH who are large, medium and small businesses. My experience as an Executive Director for Morgan Stanley, of managing a for-profit business line in a highly competitive environment, and having to face the reality of the bottom line, is one area that clearly separates me from my fellow contestants for the Liberal nomination.

Campaign Update
Nominate Bittu for Kingston and The Islands federal Liberal candidate
Thank you for joining the Liberal Party of Canada! Whether you have been a member for many years, or have just recently joined, your membership in the Party shows that you care about the future of Canada and Kingston & The Islands!
Please allow me to briefly state my unique combination of skills and experience that make me the best choice to represent the Liberal Party in the next federal election:
Community Service
Caring for our community since 1998 by working with others to address issues and concerns related to community policing, public safety, economic development, hospitals, schools, conservation and heritage. My community work has given me the extensive knowledge necessary to defend and promote the interests of Kingston & The Islands.
Political Experience
Served the people of Kingston as a City Councillor and Deputy Mayor. As a member of Council I have been involved in addressing issues related to planning and zoning, roads, transit, property standards, bylaw enforcement, city budget, water and sewer, social services, parks and recreation, business attraction and retention, affordable and social housing, Brownfield reclamation, etc. I also exercised the duties of Mayor on several occasions, including representing the City at meetings with federal and provincial government officials. I know the challenges of holding elected office, and have the skills to work with constituents, the media, other elected officials and civil servants, as well as the judgement to know when and how to address political issues.
Election Readiness
Extensive knowledge of campaigning here in Kingston & The Islands, having been actively involved in 5 federal and 3 provincial election campaigns, as well as my 3 election campaigns for City Council. I will be ready to start campaigning the day after the nomination meeting.
Party Involvement
An active member of the Liberal Party of Canada since 1991. I have served on the riding executive from 1992 to 2009, including 7 terms as the riding president. I am the most qualified candidate to represent the Liberal Party here in Kingston & The Islands.
Community Ties
Born and raised in Kingston. Attended elementary and secondary school here, as well as receiving 2 degrees from Queen's University. My education and employment, coupled with my community service and political experience, makes me a well known resident of the Kingston community, meaning better voter recognition.
Commitment
I believe so passionately that change is needed in Ottawa now, that I resigned from my employment with the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board to seek the nomination and help bring about this change.

FELLOW LIBERALS:
There is an important matter that I need to communicate to you. Political rhetoric alone will not win this election. We must have a candidate who can stand against Brian Abrams who has been campaigning and gaining ground in this community for the last 5 years. We won by only 3500 votes last election, Abrams gained ground. The conservatives believe they can win this riding.
The future of our riding hangs in the balance. This is both exciting and concerning. Exciting because change can be good, as it is necessary for progress. Concerning because we could lose this seat.
By giving me your first choice we can keep this riding Liberal. I have fought and won elections in Kingston. My work in this community has provided me with invaluable experience and public exposure. Allow me to further demonstrate that I deliver on my commitments.
Many of you know who I am and what I have accomplished. For those who do not I ask that you visit my website at www.harveyrosen.ca and critically assess my preparedness for a federal election and my desire to represent you and this community.
I look forward to participating in the nomination meeting with you.
Sincerely
Harvey Rosen

Harper government is backwards force in UN biodiversity talks in Japan
The Harper Conservative government is continuing to erode Canada’s reputation of responsibility. First in Copenhagen and now in Japan, Harper embarrassed our great nation by acting without conscience. This must stop. Canada has a strong conscience and the next Liberal government will act with it.
Open letter to Kevin Page on the real cost of Conservative prison bill
Prisons are not a solution to crime. They are necessary because society has failed to foster the correct values in all citizens. We should not be spending money to put more people into bondage. We should be spending money to allow our young minds to prosper such that they will never need to be caged.
Michael Ignatieff announces Liberal Family Care Plan
Our world is changing and our ability to provide to expanding demographics that are in need must change as well. As Liberals we look to the future and ask how can we make sure all citizens have a good quality of life? This is an outlook that is lacking in the current government.

It's hard to believe that after several months of campaigning, the nomination meeting is just 2 days away! What an exciting time for us Liberals here in Kingston and The Islands. Our Party has not had a nomination meeting in this riding since 1988! I am pleased to see the energy and enthusiasm of Party members as a consequence of this nomination contest. It will be important to keep this momentum going up to and including the next federal election!
Just as a reminder, the nomination meeting is this Sunday, November 7. The speeches will start at 1:30 p.m. Voting will begin immediately after the speeches are completed, and will continue until 7:30 p.m. For those who have mobility issues, arrangements can be made with the Liberal Party staff to move to the "front of the line", if it is safe to do so.
And don't forget to turn back your clocks 1 hour. Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday!
I am also pleased with the overwhelming support that I have received from so many of you. Despite my relatively late start in this nomination contest, the number of members who have indicated their intention to vote for me as their first choice at the nomination meeting has been growing quickly, especially since the all-candidates meetings. It's been a pleasure communicating with so many of you, whether it has been by e-mail, over the phone, at your front door, at the all-candidates meetings or on the street. I am glad that so many of you are excited about our Party's future here in Kingston and The Islands due to my candidacy.
The preferential ballot system, which we will be using at the nomination meeting, is a new way of selecting Party candidates. Gone are the days when members would have to wait around for hours, and several rounds of voting, before a winner was declared. The preferential ballot will allow members to "rank" the contestants by preference from their first choice onward. For example, many of you have indicated that you will be selecting me as your first choice on the ballot; others have indicated that you will be selecting me as your second choice. Through our Party's preferential ballot system, you will have the opportunity to vote for one, some or all of the contestants in order of your preference.
The other important aspect of this vote is that it's a secret ballot. No one will know how you have voted. I only raise this point because in speaking to some of you, you have expressed your desire to support my candidacy, but for your commitment to another candidate. Some of you committed to a candidate prior to the nomination contest beginning. Some of you committed to a candidate at the beginning of the nomination contest, not knowing who all the contestants would be. And many of you joined the Party by completing a particular contestant's membership form. However, at the nomination meeting (I'm sure my fellow contestants will agree with me on this) you are free to choose which contestant to support, according to your preference. And remember: it's a secret ballot vote! I hope many of you will consider voting for me as your first choice.
You can find more information regarding my candidacy at www.bittugeorge.ca. If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them. You can reach me at (613) 766-7317 or e-mail at bittu@bittugeorge.ca.
Since this could be a very close vote, your vote matters! If you need a ride to the nomination meeting, please contact me at the telephone number or e-mail address above.
I'm looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday afternoon!
Warmest regards,
Bittu George

Dear Liberal Party Member,
I’ve spoken with many of you in the last few months and here is what I’m hearing:
You want a candidate who can win this riding, who represents change, and who has the relevant strengths needed to make a difference in Ottawa.
My campaign has shown strength in attracting volunteers, fundraising, and the use of modern campaign methods. It has a broad base of support in our community.
My background in scientific research, international business management and developing the local green-energy sector equips me with skills and experience that are sorely needed in parliament, and can bring change to Ottawa.
We also need a candidate with deep ties to the community who will fight for our local economic development and social needs, and keep in mind the welfare of future generations.
I can be the candidate that Kingston and the Islands wants. On November 7th, please make me your #1 choice.
Warm Regards
Ted Hsu
“You will be #1 on my ballot” – John Clements, campaign manager for John Gerretsen and Peter Milliken campaigns.
“Ted’s character, his values, and his agenda - to safeguard this world for our grandchildren - are exactly what we need among our leaders.” – Peter Taylor, Professor of Mathematics, Queen’s University
“Ted is a listener. Even if he knows the right answer, he remains open to potential solutions that are not his own. He puts in the time to consider complicated issues and make the correct and not the easy decision.” -- Mark O'Friel, former Head of Institutional Equities Division, Morgan Stanley Japan
“I have never belonged to a political party, but joined the Liberals, so that I could help to nominate Ted as a candidate in Kingston and the Islands.” -- Michael Robinson, retired educator
“Ted Hsu, Game Changer for Kingston Liberals” – acorncentreblog.com
“His character is impeccable; honesty, respect, and credibility are too rarely applied to our political leaders, but not to Ted. He has the character to be a leader and the ability to inspire others to follow.” -- Steven Moore, Professor, Queen’s School of Business and School of Environmental Studies
“As somebody who is very concerned about the possible closing of the prison farms, I'm pleased to see that Ted has taken a stand on this issue, and I like his ideas for using Frontenac Institution as a demonstration site for renewable energy production. Those are the kinds of ideas that will take us into a better future!” -- Terry Bridges, Ph.D. candidate, Queen's Faculty of Education

Just a gentle reminder to please vote today, and don't forget to bring ID (proving identity and address) so that you can vote.
It's today, from 1:30pm - 7:30pm at the K-ROCK Centre.
Voting will commence at approximately 3:00 PM. You have to be in line by 7:30 pm at the latest.
You can just drop in, vote, and leave if you don't have a lot of time.
This is a close a race, and we need your vote. Whether you come for ten minutes to fill out your ballot, or stay for the whole event, I whole-heartedly thank you for your support.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible as we end this part of the journey.
