I have recently received permission to share an e-mail with the public at large. In October, 2010 there will be a municipal election. The Position of Mayor now has several people who are now seeking that position. One of the candidates happens to be the present Councilor Mr. Robert Matheson. Robert has graciously allowed me to share the following e-mail with you.

For your information, and to be included on Kingston Electors whenever possible.

If you have any feedback. I would be most interested in your impressions, and suggestions.

Sincerely,

Rob Matheson
City Councillor and Mayoral Candidate
in the upcoming 2010 Kingston Municipal elections,

Rob Matheson is making it a goal of running themost fiscally responsible and sustainable campaign of all the candidates, in the Mayoral race.

"If we hope to reach our goal of becoming Canada?s most sustainableCity, then we need candidates that not only espouse this goal, butaction it, and lead by example throughout the election campaign."Said Matheson. Going even further...I have decided to accept Fair Vote Canada'schallenge to all political candidates across the Province, that we only accept personal donations, not those of Corporations or Organized Labour or Unions. "This is an essential ingredient to the transparency and integrity of our political process, from a public perspective. I would encourage allcandidates to sign on as participants in this Fair Vote Canada challenge."

Sustainability, must be more than just words mouthed by electoral hopefuls, it must be something that we all attempt to practice in each of our daily lives, and during our election campaigns. To that end I will not be using billboards or displaying signage of any kind inpublic spaces, as it is an immense waste of resources, as well as being visual pollution, with the majority of these materials simply ending up in landfill. In regards to my own campaign financing I have a goal for myself, similar to the last election, in which I won my Council seat with the lowest monetary level of donations of all the Councillor's elected. My goal is to accomplish the same feat in my own Mayoral bid.

This election is about sustainability, fiscal prudence, efficientspending, and transparency, not to mention Citizen engagement. I believe thatthe campaign spending and choices candidates make in how each spendsthe hard earned money of donors, should and must deserve somescrutiny by the electorate. True leaders must lead by example in all we do, so that our actions match our words. Any candidate hoping to be the Mayor or a Councillor in Kingston, where our goal is to become Canada's most sustainable city, should attempt to match their electoral campaign spending, the materials they use, and how they use it, so that they align as much aspossible with that goal. This is something I will be doing. Obviously this challenge will only be meaningful and applicable to those politicians running on a sustainability agenda, and who have apersonal belief that this is a worthwhile goal, for our community. I can respect that. Those that do not action sustainability within their campaigns willcertainly be easy to find on the signs along our roadsides. As an added bonus for the media and public......

Rob Matheson is proud also be one of the first Candidates to release a preliminary election platform on his Election Campaign Web site www.robforthejob.com. For a sneak peak at what Kingston can look forward to, go to this site to see a first draft of his Vision for Kingston...A World Class City. This Vision for Kingston, is a compilation of many citizens thoughts, ideas and hopes, and is by no means complete. This Vision may also besubject to change based on continued public input, and changing realities throughout the Summer. A final draft will be accomplishedby the Close of Nominations in September.

Be the change and VOTE for the change you want to see in the world.
