June is a busy month – the calendar is full!

1) On June 4th, the CRCA completed the dredging of Highgate Creek and also the planting of 100 shrubs along the creek on 3 turtle islands to create habitat for the turtles and wildlife. What remains will be a continuation of the dredging on the south side pond so that water can flow out to Collins Bay under Bath Road. Staff just have to wait for the archeology report of the pond and then the dredging can be scheduled.

2) A quick update of the Train Whistle Night-time Ban was given tonight at Committee where staff said that a full report of the progress of talks with CNR and Transport Canada will come back to Committee at the August Environment, Infrastructure, & Transportation Committee meeting (the second Tuesday in August). The Manager in charge left the city in May; otherwise, the report was supposed to be at Committee in June.

3) We have confirmation from staff that the watermain on Butternut St. will be repaired this year (not just a band-aid emergency fix as as was done in 2009, but a significant repair will be done).

4) New playground equipment will be installed in Hillview Park

5) On Thursday June 24th, you can provide input at a public meeting for a Backyard Hens Bylaw held at the Woodbine Fire Hall (Woodbine Road and Bayridge Dr.) at 6pm. You can read about the proposal at http://www.cityofkingston.ca/cityhall/bylaws/backyardhens.asp and provide input online if you would rather do that.

6) There is a Waste Diversion Open House on Monday June 21 at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour from 5pm-8pm that will discuss Kingston’s waste options in the next few years as our landfill site is scheduled to close.

7) There is an Urban Forest Workshop on Tuesday June 22 from 7-9pm at the Invista Centre, meeting room A&B to provide input into the Urban Forest Management Plan to guide the city’s tree planting for the next 25 years.

8) June is peak turtle crossing time. Several road kills have been present. Please be on the lookout for turtles on Highway #2 in Westbrook, Bath Road in Collins Bay, Front Road in the Elevator Bay area, and Woodbine Road at the Collins Creek bridge.
