EXTRA COUNCIL MEETING FEB 17TH 2010

Jason here. Wow, the extra meeting of Council is an indication that some Council members need to be taken to the woodshed. Gerretsen and Garrison got into a shouting match – not very effectively handled by the mayor. The vote on the Barriefield Public housing recommendation from the CAO was 6 for, 5 against. Very close and if Hector had been there it might have been a tie unless she continues to declare a conflict of interest (Hutchison also claims a conflict). I bet he (Hutchison) is glad to be out of the line of fire. One can only wonder how the complexion of Council will change without Garrison, (He has declared his intention to step down for the next election).

What do we want of a Council? First of all we want a mayor who can anticipate problems and deal with them prior to meetings. Second, No fighting! If you have nothing constructive or new to say – keep quiet. There are several Councillors who abide by the last. Some of them have nothing to say. Some know that their views are already being expressed and they don’t need to add to the melee. We can hope that the Third Crossing debate occurs after the next election. The Barriefield project will be resurrected when the reports are all in which will be before the next election so we will have the joy of hearing more of the same thing.

Jason - Do you have breakdown on who voted for /against

Even though I am running in Portsmouth district, I was not a big supporter of keeping HH open. I base this on cost and to be blunt the numbers were flawed in terms of driving distance. I too, mapped it out. with the numbers given the distance was very close to a round trip from HH to multiplex. So in order for the numbers to be true. Every on of the League members had to live in a east or north east direction ( i did not include south because of proximite to the waterfont) or the went to the old arena first. I honestly do not have an address database on the members, but i am sure that there are also people north / north west of HH. That means some people will be dare i say closer and yes some people will be futher. But in the end it all balances out. So my statement is twofold 1) I would of not supported it because of the cost. 2) If someone throws numbers at me i want to know exactly what the methodology is.

It needs to close - because all the reports says it does. The LVEC and Multiplex DEPEND on the closing of some of the more expensive rinks. And HH is the one.

Its all political - when it comes to the most divisive change type of issues.

Nothing less. The overall aggregate numbers mean nothing to most !

In fact no one READ the LVEC report, like many members of the public and interest groups. Its all political!!!!!
