Notice - Memorial Centre Revitalization Public Input
Attached is a notice from the City of Kingston with respect to the Reconstruction of the Memorial Centre Park site with reference to the new linear park which is to start this fall (for completion June 2010) and the replacement of the Leo Lafleur Memorial pool (starting Spring 2010 for completion March 2011).
The notice advises of the public meeting on Monday September 28, 2009 at the Memorial Centre (where the old Sports Hall of Fame was inside the main building front door) and the link for "your opinion" (www.cityofkingston.ca/waterpark) (the plan was circulated earlier this week but is also available on the City web site). The link www.cityofkingston.ca/memorialrevitalization provides more information on plans to revitalize the site.
You can provide your input on the pool and pass this info on to those interested in these plans.

Very interesting. Wonder where they got the funds from? Probably the money that would have been put aside for a Pool at Investa Centre. You know the one that was part of the original plan for the SPORTS COMPLEX.
Took Council over 3 years to study the issue and could not decided on that one. But Now PUSHING this one. Interesting indeed.
I guess this pool will be self-sufficient and not need TAXPAYER contribution. That is the reason that the pool at Investa center isn't being built.

Both of the proposed Memorial Centre projects will receive Federal infrastructure funding to pay for capital costs.

Personally, I am very happy about the Memorial Centre getting the funding for the infrastructure projects. The residents there have worked together and accomplished what they are getting now. I am very happy that this district accomplished revilitation. As far as I am concerned that district is the only one working to help themselves and therefore deserve funding.
I am not certain, I thought that the grants from the governments were suppose to go towards new projects that were not yet build. I could be incorrect on this. However, went I asked about funding becoming available for the Investa Sports center receiving that kind of funding for a pool, I was told no.
I don't understand what the differences are regarding funding for infrastructure.

Councillor Garrison's commitment to this public asset from the outset was monumental and Councillor Smith's attention to public opinion was a wise political decision.
The approved capital budget for the pool project is $6M. The provincial and federal governments are contributing a total of $2M to this project, thanks to the timely efforts of staff, including Lanie Hurdle, Director, Recreation & Leisure Services Department. Staff met with user groups in September, held a public meeting and collected comments and feedback from the City's website.
See City report posted at http://www.cityofkingston.ca/cityhall/committees/memorialcentre/agendas.asp
The present pool needs repairs if it is to continue in service and the opportunity to build this facility and revitalize the entire site for the benefit of ALL residents of the City is truly a wonderful turn of events. City Council as a whole deserves a hearty congratulations for carefully listening to the people of Kingston!
