Citizens' input sought for garden

Whig-Standard 2009-03-06

Citizens are being invited to give input into the design of the Veterans Memorial Garden at the Memorial Centre at a meeting Monday in the cafetorium of Regiopolis-Notre Dame. In an event that will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p. m., three concept designs will be presented and discussed in a workshop format. The designs are available for viewing in advance of Monday's session at cityofkingston.ca.memorial revitalization (http://www.cityofkingston.ca/residents/recreation/arenas/memorial/index.asp). Comments will also be accepted at that address. The garden is the first phase of the revitalization process for the Memorial Centre grounds. It is intended to be a memorial commemorating sacrifice within a functional park

Other than tearing down the fence and the barns, the only money that the City (public) should be putting into the 23 acre location, is to refurbish the pool, change rooms and playground.Along with some monies for basic maintanence of the Center itself.

The roof is new, but the washrooms plumbing, electrical should be checked and certified safe for public use - by the City planning/building inspector.

But, I would suggest it get decommissioned over the next 5 years. Mostly for liability, and insurance reasons, along with long term maintenance costs that are not budgeted for, nor should be.

The rest is up to the Veterans to pay for the memorial area, gardens etc. If they want it and can afford the concepts proposed....

The gardens on a much smaller scale, maybe an option to be split between local business, or citizens donation, and the city as inkind for the design.

Concept C would be the general concept likely most agreeable for all stakeholders.
