Hello everyone,
As many of you are aware, the biggest and most eagerly anticipated item on the MPNA's annual calendar takes place this this coming Saturday -- the McBurney Park Summer Solstice Festival, which is held in conjunction with the fabulous Skeleton Park Music Festival (SPMF).
Incidentally, the SPMF kicks off at 7 p.m. this Thursday with a concert-dance at Central Public School (237 Sydenham St.). The evening will include performances by The Gertrudes, Joey Wright and Dan Whitely, Luther Wright and Jenny Whitely, and Carolyn Mark. It's open to all ages, and it's free!)
Regardless of what the weather may have in store, Saturday's events (from 10 a.m. to dusk) promise to be as fun and entertaining as in previous years, with lots of games, food, crafts for kids and opportunities to meet and hang out with your neighbours. I won't go into details here about the music – you can find everything you need to know about that side of things at www.skeletonparkmusicfestival.ca (http://www.skeletonparkmusicfestival.ca/) -- but I do have a couple of small festival-related notices:
• The music festival is aiming for a garbage-free festival this year. If you pack a lunch, please pack it in a reusable container and bring a mug or thermos for your beverages. (Of course, there will be plenty of delicious food for sale in the park.)
• As always, the MPNA will host a games and crafts section for kids. At the moment this section needs supplies such as donations of children's coloring books and story books (for a reading corner) and small containers (ceramic or plastic) for seed-planting. If you can contribute some of these items, please contact Mark Peters at 546-3709 or Sharon Way-Brackenbury at 547-5188.
• Finally ... those of you who have been in McBurney Park recently will have noticed the handsome new historical plaque in the central planter. It was unveiled a couple of weeks ago at a special ceremony organized by the Kingston Historical Society. The MPNA wishes to thank the society, and particularly their plaque guru, John Grenville, for their work on this project. Thanks also to Elizabeth Hanson and Anne Lougheed for planting the Blue Fountain grass in the flowerbed.
The association also owes a special thank-you to MPNA members Laura Murray and Jamie Swift. In addition to working over the last two years with the Historical Society to make the plaque a reality, Laura and Jamie spent countless hours in archives and libraries and interviewed several senior residents about their memories of the MPNA area so that, on plaque-unveiling day, they could lead two historical walking tours of the neighborhood. Everyone who took part on these tours agreed they were fascinating.
That's all for now. Have a great day on Saturday -- and bring your friends!
Cheers,
Alec
