2010 Election
Re-Elect Dorothy Hector

It is that time - Election time and YES I am running to represent Lakeside District for a second term. I am asking for your support for a second term as your Councillor. It has been a privilege to serve and represent the people of Lakeside District at the Council table and on the many Committees and Boards on which I have sat for the past four years.

Throughout the past four years I have demonstrated my commitment to represent the needs and desires of the people of Lakeside by ensuring infrastructure in the district that is nearing its life expectancy, is replaced and upgraded, new sidewalks installed (Bath Road, top of Days Rd, Front Rd and Henderson Blvd), lights at the corner of Stoneridge and Coverdale, and traffic calming at the request of residents on two streets, Lakeview and McEwen. Underground infrastructure is being replaced and so much more is planned and can be a reality if I am there to fight for what you need.

As the voice of reason on Council I have worked hard to create the opportunities for Kingston to attract new jobs and businesses. I supported the Lowes application, renewal of Lake Ontario Park, third crossing environmental assessment, and quality work space for our city workers (a new Public Works facility and the old S&R purchase/renovation), as well as renewable energy programs to name a few. Being instrumental in the creation of the Sustainable Kingston Plan and developing the vision to make "Kingston - Canada's most Sustainable City", I believe we have an opportunity for the people of Kingston to play a major role in our future.

I listened to seniors talking about the risk of tax increases affecting their ability to maintain their homes and how speed on local roads made it unsafe to walk. I heard how important it is for local government to understand the challenges of the city fee structure for some to afford to participate in sports and other programs; for others to simply have a home. I heard and I took action.

Our population is getting older and families are stressed with two jobs, and this means we need to continue to work hard to keep taxes as low as possible and convince the federal government to provide more and reliable gas tax funding to municipalities. The provincial government must ensure that it pays its fair share of property taxes to municipalities and we need to work with both senior levels of government to make sure they understand that municipalities are the cornerstone of our country, its where people live, work and play and where they need to invest. I want to continue to work to get more for Kingston and Lakeside District.

I am asking for your vote to re-elect me, Dorothy Hector to Council.

Sincerely,

Dorothy Hector

After graduating high school in the Kingston area Mark went on to Study Law and Security at Loyalist College. In 1982 he began working for the Ontario Provincial Police in Kingston for a number of years. Later he left to attend Queen's University for his undergraduate studies.

After leaving Queen's Mark undertook several progressive positions in the private sector before moving into the Ontario Government where as an analyst he worked on the business and financial administration of billion dollar programs. During this time Mark also wrapped up over 10 years Service in the Canadian Armed Forces Primary Reserve (including the PWOR) where he honed his leadership skills.

In 1992 Mark started his own business in the remote mountains of Yukon attracting international tourists to his newly built adventure tourism business. After a number of successful years Mark sold the business and began to establish his presence in the business community as a self employed business consultant. His work has taken him on projects in Europe, Africa, USA, Asia and around Canada. In 1998 Mark spent 18 months in Nunavut to help operationalize the newly formed Territorial Government.

What Mark Stands For

My priorities:

1. Keep City Spending Well Managed and Under Control
Advocate common sense realistic spending choices
Ensure development and Cultural Growth Happens in a viable way
Push for better utilization of city owned assets
Identify new priorities for Kingston's future
Encourage Jobs, outside investment and economic development

2. Taxation
Municipal governments raise most of the money for finacing services from the property taxes paid by residents and businesses in the local area. I believe that city council has enough funding to run this great city. Council must learn to do business knowing it has limited resources and that property tax increases have to be contained.

At the sametime council has to encourage other ways to secure investment in our community to offset rising costs.

3. Quality of Life
I believe that my roll as your councillor is to help increase our quality of life. I have already heard a great deal from LakeSide citizens and I am encouraged by the feed back. Programs, ideas, projects and community improvements need to be voiced by a councillor with the abilities to turn ideas into actions.
