Hello all,

Welcome to spring! To help herald in the warmer weather, here are a few upcoming neighborhood activities:

1. Dance at Central School with Swamp Ward Orchestra

After great attendance at its Central dance in early March, the Swamp Ward Orchestra is hosting another dance on Saturday May 24, 7:30-10:00. This time it might not snow! Alison Gowan will teach you how to do easy & dizzying french dances. Admission is $10, but free for kids.

2. Plaque Unveiling in the Park + Neighbourhood History Walking Tours

An array of local history events is planned for Sunday May 25.

At 1:30, the Kingston Historical Society and various local luminaries will unveil a historical plaque in the middle of McBurney Park. As part of this event, Brian Osborne will offer a brief historical sketch of the park's history as a cemetery.

Bookending the unveiling at 11:30 and 3:30, Jamie Swift and Laura Murray will offer historical walking tours of the Swamp Ward neighbourhood. Jamie and Laura have started a project of interviewing people who grew up in the neighbourhood in the 30s and 40s, and we'll offer in these tours a few of our gleanings so far. Tours will conclude with a visit to the chapel of the House of Providence on Ordnance Street.

Preregistration is necessary for these (free) tours, because we can only take 25 people at a time. To register, go to http://swampwardwalkingtour1.eventbrite.com (http://swampwardwalkingtour1.eventbrite.com/)/

One more event this same day: at 2:30, Laura and perhaps one or two of our "informants" will give a short talk for kids in the park about what it was like to be a kid in the area in the 1930s. Stories about playing tag on boxcars, tobogganing on Patrick Street, and sneaking out of pool halls will be featured.

3. Free bikes for kids

Yellow Bike Action (in Friendship Park on Carlyle Street, just north of York) has about two dozen children's bicycles to give away to kids under 12. They are used and some are in better condition than others ... but they're free. First come, first served.

All the best,

Alec
