Public Invited To Free Sustainability Presentation

FOCUS Kingston is inviting community organizations, businesses and residents to attend a free public presentation and networking event on May 15, 2008 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Memorial Hall, City Hall, 218 Ontario St. This City committee's new FOCUS is to define ways to make Kingston Canada's most sustainable city.

The FOCUS Kingston Steering Committee is engaged in the development of a new cycle of community strategic planning for the City with the goal of completing an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP). This ICSP is a long-term plan, developed in consultation with community members, which will provide direction for the City to realize its sustainability objectives for the social, cultural, economic and environmental dimensions of its identity.

Come network at the free presentation of The Business Case for Sustainability by Bob Willard. It's May 15, 7 to 9 p.m. at Memorial Hall, City Hall.

Mr. Willard is a leading expert on the business value of corporate sustainability strategies. In the last five years, he has given hundreds of keynote presentations to corporations, governments, academics, and NGOs. Mr. Willard applies business and leadership development experience from his 34-year career at IBM Canada to engage the business community in proactively avoiding risks and capturing opportunities associated with sustainability issues.

He is the author of The Sustainability Advantage: Seven Business Case Benefits of a Triple Bottom Line, which quantifies potential bottom-line benefits from using sustainability strategies, and The Next Sustainability Wave: Building Boardroom Buy-in, which shows how to convince senior executives to commit to sustainability strategies. His most recent venture is a DVD presentation of The Business Case for Sustainability. It is used in webinars and videoconferences and helps reduce his carbon footprint from global speaking trips.

He has a BSc from McGill University (1964), an MEd from the University of Toronto (2000), and a PhD from the University of Toronto (2005). A resident of Ontario, he is the proud owner of his third hybrid car, a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid.

4th Annual Designing Healthy Livable Communities Conference in Lansing, MI, May 30th

May 29-30, national and state experts will gather in Lansing, Michigan to discuss how to create policies that will enable community members to lead healthy, active lives at the 4th Annual Designing Healthy Livable Communities Conference: The Power of Policy.

National Charrette Institute Board member and trainer, David Brain, PhD., joins a panel including Harrison Rue of the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission in Charlottesville, VA, and local experts for a special training session entitled, "Walking the Talk: Using Practical Consensus Building Techniques, Effective Public Participation Methods and Charrettes to Turn Ideas Into Policy and Policy Into Action to Rebuild Our Communities." The training takes place from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm on May 30th.

Learn to implement and facilitate collaborative consensus building, effective public participation techniques, charrettes and other practical methods for formulating policy changes. Tried and true methods to get the public and stakeholders to attend your meetings, feel like their voices are heard, come to your next event and become partners for change, instead of obstacles to success, will be shared with session participants.
