ARE KINGSTON CITY COUNCILLORS PAID ENOUGH FOR THE WORK THEY DO ??
A CITIZENS COMMITTEE WILL TRY TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION.
COUNCIL IS EXPECTED TO APPOINT A COMMITTEE TONIGHT... TO REVIEW THE SALARIES PAID TO ALL COUNCIL MEMBERS.
RIGHT NOW, THE 12 DISTRICT COUNCILLORS EARN ABOUT 18-THOUSAND A YEAR.
SOME HAVE COMPLAINED THAT'S NOT ENOUGH COMPENSATION FOR THE HOURS THEY WORK, NOR ENOUGH TO ATTRACT FUTURE COUNCILLORS.
BUT ANY PAY RAISE COULD BE A COUPLE OF YEARS DOWN THE ROAD.
VICKI SCHMOLKA
"EVEN IF WE SET A SALARY THIS TERM.
IT SHOULD BE THE PEOPLE THAT WIN IN 2010 WHO SHOULD BENEFIT FROM IT.
SO WE DON'T VOTE OURSELVES A SALARY, WE VOTE NEW SALARY FOR THE NEWLY ELECTED COUNCIL.
I THINK THAT'S FAIR WAY TO GO FORWARD.
SO THAT YOU HAVE TO WIN TO GET THE NEW SALARY.
I THINK THAT MIGHT BE A GOOD APPROACH."
THE C-A-O RECOMMENDS A 7-MEMBER "SALARY REVIEW COMMITTEE" BE COMPRISED OF MEMBERS FROM BUSINESS, HEALTH CARE, NON-PROFIT AND THE EDUCATION SECTORS.... ALSO 2 CITIZENS... AND A FORMER MEMBER OF COUNCIL.
