Kingston City Council will consider the following motion at its meeting to be held on February 19, 2008.
-- Kingston Electors
Moved by Councillor Gerretsen
Seconded by Councillor Schmolka
WHEREAS many citizens of Kingston and members of Kingston City Council are concerned about the effects of climate change and would like to take action to address the problem; and,
WHEREAS the city of Sydney, Australia, took action last year by observing Earth Hour, during which time the city and its residents stopped using electricity for one hour to demonstrate their awareness of the climate change problem and to reduce their use of greenhouse gases for that hour; and,
WHEREAS this year a number of other municipalities around the world have said that they will also be observing
Earth Hour;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT Council support the observation of Earth Hour in Kingston, to join with our neighbours around the world in this symbolic recognition of concern about climate change; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT staff provide Council with information at its next meeting on February 19, 2008, about steps that the City can take to observe Earth Hour and to promote Earth Hour so that citizens know about its time and date and are encouraged to participate in it by turning off their televisions, their radios, their computers, and
their lights, on Saturday March 29 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
