MPNA update -- AGM, art & music

From: Alec Ross

October 11, 2007

Hello, all,

If you're like me, you're having a hard time fooling yourself that fall isn't just around the corner. The leaves are turning red and orange, the nights are chillier and the days are shorter. In other words, the evidence is clear, and it all leads to one inescapable conclusion: that it's time to start planning for the MPNA's annual general meeting.

No date has been set yet, but mid-November is when the AGM usually happens. As soon as I have a firm date and time, I'll let you know. Expect them within the next week. In the meantime, however, an agenda needs to be put together, and for this I'll need your help. Basically I need ideas about the direction you'd like the association to take over the next 12 months.

This past year was busy. As a result of the collaboration between the MPNA and the City, McBurney Park's pathways were repaved and the infrastructure for new lighting and benches was installed. Soon, six new trees should be planted – finally! Of course, there's more, too. But what should we focus on next? New playground equipment? More trees? What about others parts of the neighborhood -- for example, might we start thinking of ways to improve Friendship Park (on Carlyle Street, where the Yellow Bike Action headquarters is)? Are there ongoing traffic or parking concerns that need to be addressed? Those are just suggestions, but please let me know what you think needs to be discussed, and I'll try to include it on the agenda.

We'd also like to see some new faces on our committees, so if you have knowledge, skills or enthusiasm to contribute, please don't be shy about volunteering. Once again, we have Park, Social, Traffic, Communications and Land Use committees. (For more info about the committees, check out our website at www.mcburneypark.ca (http://www.mcburneypark.ca/)). (Yes, I'll try to be better about updating it.)

Art Show: At 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 (i.e. tomorrow) there will be an opening reception for an unusual art show at The Artel (205 Sydenham St.). It's called Sand Class-tles: Planting in Rows, and is described as "an exhibition of school desks made of soil and sand." Its creator, Rebecca Soudant, a high school art teacher, is well-known locally as a prolific producer of offbeat and thought-provoking work. The show closes on Oct. 14.

Finally, a note for those of you who like to dance ... and who doesn't? On Saturday, Oct. 13, there will be a fundraising dance at Mulberry School (25 Markland Ave.) featuring Kingston's oh-so-hot Latin dance band, Pico de Gallo. Tickets are $15 in advance and are available at Tara Foods and the Mulberry School. The ticket includes the show, delicious food to munch on and (at 7:30 p.m.) a salsa dance lesson before the main event. The dance itself starts at 8 p.m.

That's all for now.

Don't forget to send me your ideas for the AGM!

Cheers,

Alec
