MPNA update - Park cleanup, Kincore donation, Apple Crisp music series

Hello all,

It's been a few weeks since my last update, and those of you who frequented the park over the summer may have heard some of the following McBurney Park news, but, at the risk of repeating myself ... here goes ...

1) McBurney Park is looking a bit scruffy these days, so on Sunday, Sept 9 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, the MPNA is hosting a Fall Park Cleanup. Meet in the park at 10 a.m. Please bring plastic garbage bags, gloves and rakes. It's a great way to meet your neighbours and help make the park beautiful for when the leaves begin to drop.

2) As you know, city work crews are digging up Alma Street to prepare for the installation of new water and sewer pipes, and safety fencing has been erected around the north and west park perimeter. The road work, which will also take place on Balaclava St., will last for a couple of months. When it's finished, Alma and Balaclava will be newly paved; Alma will accommodate one-way (southbound) traffic; and the present western boundary of McBurney Park will extend a bit further west, due to the narrowing of Alma.

3) At the end of July, Kingston developer Kim Donovan, the president of Kincore Holdings Ltd., kindly donated $100,000 to the United Way, an amount that will be evenly split among 10 local charities. One of the beneficiaries is McBurney Park, whose $5000 share of the donation will go towards the purchase of new playground equipment. The type of equipment the MPNA is looking at is expensive, and we're a long way from actually installing anything, but Kincore's generous contribution will greatly enhance the association's ability to raise further funds to purchase the items we want. The MPNA will keep you informed as this pool of money grows and the playground plans develop.

Thank you, Kim!

4) A group of young Kingston musicians and music aficionados (Nich Worby, musician; Laura Kelly, CFRC; Meghan Sheffield,Kingston Whig-Standard/Queens Journal; Annie Clifford, musician), have started an all-ages Kingston concert series. It's similar in spirit to the venerable LiveWire/Sticky Buns series, which many of you will remember. The Apple Crisp Music Series (www.applecrisp.ca (http://www.applecrisp.ca/)) takes place at Queen St. United Church (at the corner of Clergy & Queen) from 7 to 10 p.m. on Tuesdays. Cost is $5 per person.

5) Finally, some of you have expressed concern that the activities of some park users have made McBurney Park a less welcoming, and sometimes intimidating, place. It's in everyone's best interest that the park remains safe and comfortable at all times for all users, especially children. Therefore, if you witness any inappropriate behaviour (fighting, drug use, etc.) don't hesitate to let the Kingston Police know about it. Their number is 613-549-4660.

As always, if you have any comments, questions or concerns about the park, please feel free to send them to me at alecross@sympatico.ca.

All the best,

Alec
