View Full Version : Sidewalk on north side of Union Street

The sidewalk on the north side of Union Street between Collingwood and Frontenac Street is in poor condition. It is a concrete sidewalk which was paved over as a quick and dirty repair, and which is now cracked and uneven. When it rains, large puddles accumulate due to the uneven surface. There are trees very close to the sidewalk in places, whose roots are causing the sidewalk to stick up in places. This has been a problem since at least when I moved to the neighbourhood (2000). Also, the pavement on the street near the intersection of Albert & Union is in very poor condition following the installation of a gas line by incompetent contractors.

Thanks for this contribution. Unhappily, this situation is repeated throughout the downtown neighbourhoods. Not sure why the city is so indifferent to good maintenace, to pedestrian issues - and I always feel badly for those many folk who must travel in wheelchairs and have to crash and bump their way along our streets and sidewalks.
That being said we will try to get some sort of response from the appropriate city department - but don't hold your breath!

Park needs basic maintenance
Letters to the Editor - Thursday, July 05, 2007 Updated @ 7:05:38 AM
City council appears to have spent much time discussing Lake Ontario Park, and the Whig-Standard has devoted a fair amount of space to various citizens who have thoughts on the future of the park.
As a daily dog-walker in the park, I would like to draw public attention to the fact that while all the talking is going on, the maintenance of the park is being sadly neglected.
Other than sporadic lawn-cutting, maintenance is non-existent. Leaves from last fall still litter the ground, tree branches that have been blown down still cover lots of territory, trees that should be trimmed or felled have not been touched and the storage barn at the boat-launching area on the west side of the park appears to have been abandoned, with broken windows and a rotted door through which squirrels and chipmunks have access to the building.
Let's stop the talk and do some real maintenance.

Hum, Very interesting posting. Thanks Dogma for placing this on here.
It looks like the parks in general might be in trouble. Not so much damage in Old Colony Park as you mentioned at Lake Ontario Park, however, I do find that the maintenance in the park is lacking. I have to ask why all the DRY leaves and shrubby that has been cut down has been left on the ground. It may be deliberate so that the animal life there might need it but I am not sure. Is that the reason there is alot of DRY grasses and cut shrubbery left behind.
