Subject: MPNA meeting about possible closure of Central Public School, 2007-05-01

Hello everyone,

I have a very important announcement: at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, there will be a meeting at Central Public School, 237 Sydenham St. about the possibility of the school's closure within three years. Central's Principal, Cathy Lincoln-Chiang, Helen Chadwick, King's Town's school trustee and representatives from the Limestone District School Board and will be there to answer questions from the public on this critical issue. If you can, please come, even if you're not a parent of a child or children attending Central. This is a matter that affects all of us.

Background:

The Limestone District School Board is mulling over a recently released consultant's report about the future of the board's schools, most of which are aging, expensive to maintain and accommodating fewer students. To make a long story short, the report recommended that the board close about half of its 60-odd schools over the next decade and replace them with a lesser number of larger schools. Of particular concern to the MPNA is the report's recommendation that Central, Sydenham and Winston Churchill all be closed and a new elementary school (for Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8) be built on the present Winston Churchill site in 2009/10.

If you care to peruse the report, here is the link:

The section that describes Central, Sydenham and Winston Churchill begins on page 31.

School board officials hasten to remind us that the report is only a draft and that nothing is even close to being carved in stone. This may be the case, but Central's inclusion on the potential hit list is extremely worrisome. The school is an absolutely vital part of the McBurney Park neighborhood and its closure would be devastating for both the immediate area and for downtown Kingston. It is essential that we know as much as possible about this issue so that, should the need arise, the MPNA can support an effective and successful campaign to defend our local public school.

See you at the meeting!

Alec
