Come Out and Make Your District Better

Hello folks

March 12, 2007

Robert Matheson has asked me to chair our association for an interim period. I have agreed to do so. A lot has happened since we met last month.

Cherri Walwyn and I did attend the Funder’s Information Session on March 5, 2007. The City of Kingston does provide funding or neighbourhood associations so we will work towards establishing ourselves properly.

Patricia McAnally has indicated that she will be willing to help us with calling people who do not have e-mails become informed about meetings.

Jordon Press from the Whig has e-mailed me to set up a meeting in order to inform him about what our association is about. If anyone would like to go with me to meet up with him, please let me know. I can use all the help I can get. The first person who replies will be chosen.

The next Meeting is March 18, 2007 at 4 to 5 p.m. Several people have expressed interest in being part of the Board of Directors and we shall elect our Board at that time.

At the February meeting, I mentioned that I would appreciate a list of your concerns, issues that you would like to tackle as a member of an association. We will be discussing how to start to tackle those issues.

I have attached a copy of our first press release. Below is a couple of examples of how Community Associations can work. Check them out and let’s discuss how we want to approach things.

Of possible interest.

Hello Everyone,

For those who did attend the May 20th meeting and those who did not. I want to deal with environmental issues in the following way.

Karen Stos has agreed to be our Environmental Cordinator and gave us the following information;

Chemicals to Avoid
Diethanolamine (DEA)
Formaldehyde
Parabens
Petrolatum
Mineral Oil
Phenylenediamine (PPD)...P-diaminobenzene
Pthalates (fragrance)
Sodium laury/laureth sulphate (SLS)
Talc
Toluene
Triclosan

How Im JUST a retired housewive. I avoid anything which even sounds like the stuff above. I avoid them because I have NOOOOOOOOO CLUE of what these are except for Mineral Oil and Talc.

However, I am learning alot from Karen. So i when on line to learn what these things are. I am NOT an environmentalist however I do care about the environment. I am also the type of person who if told not to do something HAS to do it just to find out WHY I should not do it. The one thing that I told Karen is that I have trouble with the environmenalist telling the ORDINARY people what not to do however our government DOES NOTHING to STOP the companies that make this stuff.

Since Karen did point out what I shouldn't do I always NEED an alternative to solve the issues that these chemicals are used for. Here are a few websites that will help us clean up our act.

Instead of:
Diethanolamine (DEA) used for washing dishes
Alternative can be found at: /www.hattonandlaws.com.au/natural/nat_household.html

Formaldehyde also known as Imidazolidinyl, urea, DMDM,Hydantoin, Quaternium-15

Instead of:
Parabens Used in Cosmetics
Alternative preservative at: /www.schuelke-mayr.com/download/pdf/cint_len_Alternative_to_Paraben.pdf

Petrolatum

Instead of:
Mineral Oil used as laxative
Alternative can be found at www.soundfeelings.com/free/colon_cleansing.htm

Instead of
Phenylenediamine (PPD)...P-diaminobenzene used in Hair Dye
Alternative could be don't use this stuff at all. Enjoy your natural hair colour.

Pthalates (fragrance)

Instead of
Sodium laury/laureth sulphate (SLS)
Alternative at www.care2.com/greenliving/383.html

Instead of
Talc
Alternative is to use cornstarch

Toluene

Instead of
Triclosan
Alternative at http://healthtruthrevealed.com/full-page.php?id=1003187503&&page=article

The question I have regarding the alternatives is this. If government and business knows the information that I just presented, WHY don't they do something about it instead of puting the pressure on the ordinary citizen. I have asked this question many times and never get a real answer. It is because of the stand business and government takes on this matter that I will not be held responsible and I shall not worry about these chemicals.

It really comes down to this folks, Stop the Sale of these chemicals for everyone who would use them and you will have achieved the environmentalist goals.

I just wanted to congratulate Mr. Reynolds for getting Youth Park Councilors and neighbourhood children who participated in a Bake Sale at the Entrance of Old Colony Park. This happened about a week or a week and half ago.

How people would say what is so great about this. Well let me tell you.

1: The Youth councilors are examples of what our younger children can see as being proactive, courteous, friendly and accountable.
2: The parents or teens who actually did the cooking of these sweets did a great job and we loved every one of their products.
3: The young boys who showed the SIGN: HONK IF YOU LIKE COOKIES. were great. This shows them that advertisement is an excellent tool for a business.
4: The young boys and girls who were there showed their enthusiasm for participating in a neighbourhood activity. This shows them involvement in their community is GREAT.
5: The young people who handled the money learned that it must be guarded, counted, and used for important uses. They learn money management.
6: These young people had fun, which showed that a career should be something you enjoy not just tolerated.

Now, I noticed many cars who honked for the kids but didn't necessarily buy the sweets. They are to be commended as well. These people encourgaged the kids to participate. This shows the kids that not everyone will want to buy their products but do respect them for participating.

Now the cars who didn't honk for the kids. SHAME ON YOU. You must be a sad dull person and I feel sorry that you are soo dull and uneventful. Don't tell me you didn't notice them because the kids were right next to the stop sign at the park. Okay, maybe you didn't notice and are the ones who don't respect your area and don't even stop at the sign. ANYWAY YOU LOOK AT IT SHAME ON YOU.

It isn't often children are encouraged to participate in fun things. Television never shows this side of things. Television only shows the involvment with drugs, cigs, etc.

To the children that participate, Congradulations and keep it up. For the Mr. Reynolds, Please, Please, make this available at EVERY park and parket in the city.

Okay, That is my two cents worth and $10.00 lol lol. Man those sweets were good. :D:D:D:D

When Asked if I can do a Bio on Karen, she shared the following "I try to dig up green info! lol

Just for the record (if you want to know) I have a certificate in Social Welfare from Laurentian University "

Karen Stos Shares Websites Dealing with Environmental Issues

I am not an environmentalist. However, Our Environmental Representatives is Karen Stos. Over the past few months Karen has send me and Robert Matheson the following websites to view and make up our own minds on various issues.

Karen is the type of person who learns, shares, argues with me, and convinces me that I SHOULD do my part to make this a better world.

Karen is an activist, a dedicated person to her causes. She is what I believe to be one of the most inspirational person that I have ever met.

I have argued with her, disagreed with her, and Still I come to the conclusion that People who start out with different opinions for whatever reason actually can meet in the middle and accomplish what governments have not done.

Karen. Thank you very much for sharing these websites. Please continue to share with us. You are the type of person who can and will make changes for us to have a better world.

Lydia MacPherson, Chair
Loyalist Cataraqui Community Association

p.s. Karen is only one such person that is a member of our association. We have many more people with exactly the same passion for their causes.

For People interested in becoming part of the Loyalist Cataraqui Community Association, We met every third Sunday of each month at Mino's Village Restaurant between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. Next Meeting Sunday, September 16, 2007
