A House Divided
Jason here. Last night’s Council meeting ended, blessedly, before I fell asleep. So I was able to savour the whole meal. And what a meal it was!
There are a number of things that are clear to me and I hope to others.
The balance on Council has changed
Smart growth and transparency – the latter the watchword of the most recent election are in
Verbosity is in.
While no one could object to the emphasis on poverty, the election wasn’t about class or income divisions it was about the vision of the city of which concern for those less fortunate was a part but only a part.
The alternative vision is yet to be articulated. Somebody had better do something fast about this or we are going to wind up in a situation where no one wins and the city will grind to a halt. Set up a priority setting session with a report, so that the public can judge it. That is transparency.
Stopping what progress had been made, if any, on the third crossing is interesting from a number of perspectives. I can buy the argument that settling the Growth Study first is a good thing. BUT shouldn’t this have been decided before budget discussions. Decisions are being made on the fly. This is not the way decisions should be made. Time for a priority setting session Mr. Mayor. A public one. Don’t let our administrators be lashed for not knowing where Council is going, when no one seems to know.
