McBurney Park Neighborhood Association update

November 22, 2006

Dear neighbours and friends,

This is my first message to you as the new coordinator of the McBurney Park Neighbourhood Association. I'm excited about working with you to make our neighborhood an even better place for everyone.

Before I write anything more, I'd like to thank my predecessor, Sergio Sismondo, for all his hard work over the last year and, more recently, for his continued help in getting me up to speed on my new duties. He wasn't just an excellent public spokesperson for the MPNA – he worked regularly and diligently behind the scenes with City staff and people in the neighborhood to advance the projects the MPNA is working on. As I said at the association's Annual General Meeting a few weeks ago, Sergio will be a tough act to follow.

OK, now for the news:

• The MPNA now has a website that lets the (online) world know what we're all about. You'll find it at www.mcburneypark.ca (http://www.mcburneypark.ca/). The website is a work in progress, so please feel free to email me your comments and suggestions on how to improve it. (My e-mail address is alecross@sympatico.ca (alecross@sympatico.ca))

• As most of you know, King's Town district – where our neighbourhood is located, in case you were wondering – elected a new city councillor on Nov. 13. I'd like to congratulate Rob Hutchison on his win and wish him good luck over the next four years. You can reach Rob at home at 544-3515.

While I'm on the subject, I'd also like to thank Rob's election opponents, Sean Molloy and Mark Potter, for contesting the Kings Town seat. Although they didn't win – Sean withdrew from the race and Mark came second on voting day – both candidates worked hard during their campaigns and helped to get people thinking about civic issues that affect us all.

• Over the next weeks I'll be meeting with the heads of the various MPNA committees to figure out what we want to accomplish in the coming year. If you're not familiar with what the committees do, there's information about them on the website (again, it's at www.mcburneypark.ca (http://www.mcburneypark.ca/)). If you're interested in joining a committee or contributing ideas about new issues or projects, let me know and I'll direct your message to the right person.

• Lastly, a public service announcement: Mulberry School (25 Markland Ave.), is hosting its annual Winter Fair on Saturday, November 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be puppet shows at 10:30 and 12:30, music and singing, craft-making for children, a cafe with delicious food, a silent auction, and vendors selling books, soaps, vintage clothing, handcrafted toys, holiday gifts and supplies, etc. Admission is free.

That's all for now.

All the best,

Alec Ross

Way to go McBurney Neighborhood. You have alot to be proud of.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if every neighborhood in Kingston had the same pride with people willing to make every neighborhood great.

Thank you McBurney residents for showing us what community is all about.
