The Timmy's on King St. continues to be one of the worst intersections in the city. People ignore the do not enter sign and illegally turn left off of King (west bound), usually blocking the Union St / King intersection. For a while the police were monitoring this problem but lately it has gotten worse. A permanent solution is needed for the east bound clogging of traffic but also with the entrance into Timmys.

Fixing this might bring the wrath of coffee drinkers down on your head. What is the solution to this? Personally I like the site but think the complaints are justified.

http://kingstonelectors.ca/forums/images/icons/icon9.gif When this business was being proposed there was a lot of opposition because of the anticipated traffic problems - which indeed have materialized.
The only way that this will be resolved is if the entrance off King St. is blocked off entirely, and all traffic enters/exits the site from the sidestreet (which is controlled by the traffic light) Drivers coming from the east simply do not honour the 'no left turn sign. It really does not matter if the police periodically enforce this; once the few days of enforcement are over, people revert to their old habits.
So ... the design of the site needs to be changed if this problem is to be solved. It does not help that the streets are very narrow here, with no room for a left turning lane. If I felt very strongly about it I would start by getting a petition signed, by a very large number of a) residents, b) drivers who have to use this interesection at commute periods.
And how would a change affect Timmy's bottom line? How much do you love your Timmy's coffee?

Hello again
We have heard back from the City re: the problems generated by people making prohibited left turns into Timmy's. At this point they are prepared to look at that intersection to see if this rather narrow portion of King St can accommodate a concrete median which would stop most vehicles. But people desparate for coffee might climb over the median anyway!
I raised the question of closing off the King St entrance entirely (but of course that makes no sense because it would disallow eastward travelling cars from entering). I wonder if a sharp curve at the entrance would make it too difficult to get in for the folks making the banned left-hand turn in?.
We hope to hear more from them at a later date, and will let you know if anything comes of this. They do agree that this is a problem area.
Cheers

Nothing has changed at this intersection (except more traffic) since I first wrote of this problem. At certain times the lot is full and east bound cars are backed up by the line ups for the drive thru, sometimes 1-3 cars on the road waiting to get in the lot. It appears that little to no enforcement, either about left turns or back up traffic for the drive thru. I don't go to that Timmy's, for the stated reasons, even though it is the closer for work. As for allowing this store to be there ... another fine move by council and the city planning department.

Why was this location approved in the first place??,Every thing in this city is "Studied" to death. A blind man could have seen the problems this place was going to cause

This development was quite controversial even as it was being developed.
Its a good example of why public input into the new Official Plan process is important. Current development requirements are quite limited and often do not easily restrict or prevent problematic development projects.
