Memorial Site Design Charette

St. Lawrence Valley Society of Architects
Preliminary Report (September, 2005)

Summary of principles

· Maintain public ownership of the whole site - no portion to be sold

· The entire site will be accessible to persons with disabilities · Connect to neighbourhoods in all directions, in and out - Widen and tree boulevards: Kingscourt, Albert, Pine…

· Pedestrian gateways at each street intersection - crosswalks on Concession St. - each gateway has its own identity, has a "sense of place", is a meeting place

· Playing fields camouflaged by tree buffer zones and located on north portion of the site

· Applied environmentally conscious "Green Thinking" - Rain water collection from roof for irrigation purposes - Solar energy production (Centre roof) - Capture latent heat from ice production - Improve thermal quality of the buildings - Use of permeable paving allowing natural drainage and materials with minimal footprint on the environment

· Continued use of Memorial Site buildings for the community · Enhancing the Memorial Centre allowing new activities such as the introduction of an indoor track around the upper level, where seating would be reduced, and linking it to an outdoor track

· Enhanced children area water use including splash pad, water slides, shaded areas, and day care facility

· Extend hockey theme into park with life like characters animation

· Reduction of visible boundaries to the site - Removal of perimeter wire fence

· Site to serve local neighbourhoods primarily - Special regional events such as Agricultural Fair to be accommodated by designing for flexibility (Ex: Removable fence)

· Maintain agricultural component by introducing community gardens, green house, composting and educational aspect

· Restrict vehicle access to parking lots only and camouflage areas of parking by covering or planting over them

· Formalize and enhance memorial entrance at York St., i.e. fountain, relocation of plaque, planting, formal garden

· Creation of a pedestrian only access from York St. to playing fields, away from car parks

· Designated bus access

Wow, Wow, Wow,

I don't know about other community rinks. However, I really think that the people who are doing things at the Memorial Centre should get the job of working for this entire city. If these people can do so much for their community, just maybe they should teach us all how to work without our community.

They have created such a great job on their centre that I almost want to call it the THE LVEC and I mean it in a admirining way.

The group that came up with these ideas - have some good ideas.

Especially; with the fenced in "desert" that is there now.

Unfortuanately; they need tons of money to do so. $$$

But, they forgot the multpurpose usage for Trade Show, Special Events.
For non profits / for profit groups...

This is definitely not an LVEC.

Nor do they have that in mind. It is a "Community Centre".
