There was a large public attendance at the JK Tett Centre meeting on February 28th. The meeting discussed options for what the City and Queen's propose for the centre. "Artscope" from Toronto certainly had their hands full and were not warmly received.

At the meeting were Mayor Harvey, Mark Fluhrer, Cynthia Beach, Bittu George, Beth Pater, Floyd Patterson, and Howard Stone along with Queen's representatives and the media (see below).

CREATIVE MINDS IN THE KINGSTON ARTS COMMUNITY ARE TRYING TO COME UP WITH IDEAS ON HOW TO REDEVELOP THE J-K TETT CENTRE.

OVER 100 PEOPLE ATTENDED AN OPEN HOUSE LAST NIGHT -- WHERE THEY GOT A GLIMPSE OF WHAT THE FUTURE MAY HOLD.

THE TORONTO BASED CONSULTING FIRM -- ARTSCAPE -- IS EXAMINING WAYS TO TURN THE UNDERUSED CENTRE INTO A CULTURAL CLUSTER.

THERE ARE 3 SCENARIOS TO SHOWCASE THE ARTS AND CULTURAL GROUPS IN ONE COMPLEX.

" THE FIRST ONE IS A VERY FINANCIALLY LIMITED INVESTMENT SCENARIO IN WHICH WE DEAL WITH THE EXISTING SITUATION AND HOW CAN WE MAKE SMALL INVESTMENTS TO MAKE IT WORK BETTER.

THE SECOND SCENARIO IS ABOUT IF WE HAD TO START OVER AGAIN IF WE COULD SORT OF RE-THINK HOW THIS DEVELOPMENT IS AND REALLY SORT OF GALVANIZE A VISION AROUND WHAT IT COULD BE, WHAT THEN HOW WOULD WE MAKE IT WORK THEN.

AND THE THIRD OPTION IS RECOGNISING THE REALITY THAT A SIGNIFICANT PARTNER MIGHT BE COMING INTO THE FORAY AND HOW CAN WE INTERACT WITH THEM AND THEY'RE VERY OPEN TO THAT KIND OF THING AND WE ARE OF COURSE TALKING ABOUT QUEENS' UNIVERSITY."

PEOPLE AT THE MEETING VOICED CONCERNS OVER THAT LAST OPTION.

THEY WANT TO KNOW WHAT A PARTNERSHIP WITH QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY MIGHT INVOLVE.

THE CONSULTANT'S FINAL VISION FOR J-K TETT WILL BE UNVEILED IN A FEW WEEKS.

I think that the original review of the Tett Centre was asking the right question. Is it fulfilling a municipal objective? I think the answer is clear that it is indeed providing a cultural nexus. However it is clear that some groups have been subsidized while others have no support whatsoever. I have no illusions that these historical subsidies will change. I would love to see the Queen's facullty of Music living in the Tett Centre. The thought of these young musicians living among us and enriching our lives excites me.
More music please!

In response to an increased public interest in hearing more about Artscape
Inc.'s option in its J.K. Tett Centre's feasibility study to include Queen's
University, the City of Kingston has invited Queen's to make a public
presentation outlining its proposal for the J.K. Tett Centre.
